I found the holiday decor to be excellent -- the pub had a lively and cheerful atmosphere, good lighting, and made me forget all about the grim weather outside. The historical nature of the building was a draw as well, since I'm from far-away Australia and had heard that this building has been the heart of this community for a very long time. The lovely photos of the building in the past did bear this out, but I didn't get much of a 'historical' sense otherwise: it's just a nice pub, really. The food also came highly recommended, from the locals I was with, but although they ordered things they were familiar with, in the end they walked out of there saying it wasn't up to the usual standard... as for me, I saw that the TripAdvisor reviews show most people who had a fantastic time chose the steak dish, so I had myself a steak (and added another steak on the side). I was left feeling like the steak was quite dear (in AUD terms) and quite average... and there was such a meagre set of vegetable-sides and onion rings, that I was left wondering whether paying the extra for an extra steak (so I could try the rump and the sirloin) had caused the kitchen to reduce the amount of veg, onion-rings, etc., to fit the extra meat. The drinks were tiny, too, by my standards -- I got this teeny bottle and a big glass, so I couldn't even really fill the glass. Made it feel a bit unsatisfying. One of the other guests with me had a burger, and complained that it tasted incredibly bland... I had a bite myself, and it tasted more like biting into gelatin than anything. I didn't have any of the nachos, but neither was I tempted by the look of them. The person having the salad didn't finish it, which doesn't speak highly of the salad either, since she would've been starving. The QR codes on the tables lead to a hierarchial mess of a menu that's hard to find things in, and demand a table-number from you, which isn't on the tables, requiring you to go speak to the staff anyway. Overall, I'd say I still had an OK experience, but it wasn't quite...
Read moreI had booked the table so that a friend and I could enjoy an after work catch up and early dinner. We went to the bar to order food and drink. The young bar girl was confused and didn't get our food or drink order correct. A member of staff came from the kitchen to our table to ascertain the order as there was some confusion as to what we had ordered. Even after explaining, the order was not correct once it was served.. We were charged for food which didn't arrive. Also I had ordered and paid for a pint of soda and lime but was served a half. The food was hot and well presented but not exactly what we had asked for. We had booked the table from 6pm until 7.30pm as agreed on the online booking. However, at 7.05pm the male pub manager told us that we had to move tables mid meal as he needed our table prepared for a large group of Americans who had arrived at the pub early. They had booked a table for 7.30pm. We feel that this is totally unacceptable and very, very rude. I told him that we had booked the table until 7.30 but he insisted that we move. Several waitresses then started to move our plates and drinks to another table across the pub. To say we were gobsmacked is an understatement. I complained to the manageress of the pub who was very apologetic and kind and appreciated why we were upset. We were given a refund for our main course (but not the side order that I'd ordered and which did not arrive!) and a drink. She gave us both a dessert and a coffee on the house. This was a lovely gesture from her. However, we won't be returning to the Greenhouse Pub in Llantarnam any time soon. Neither of us would recommend this pub to our...
Read moreI booked a table because of half term and the 30% off mains taking our great neice and great nephew out for lunch and bowling later. My husband went into The Greenhouse Pub while I parked the car. A staff member took my husband to table he did not mention any food delay. My family looked at the menu while I ordered drinks at the bar NO mention of food delay. We chose starters and mains from menu. When I ordered food at the bar I was informed the starters would take 45 minutes and mains another 45 minutes I had bowling booked I approached my family they said they would just have mains . I rang Hollywood bowling and they could fortunately change my booking for later time. The meal eventually arrived 55 minutes from time on receipt. My curry and rice wasn't hot and my great nephew ' s steak was tough he couldn't eat half of it. They were so hungry and it ruined what should have been a lovely treat. They are teenagers and we don't see them very often so we were really upset. No one came to check on us about the meal. As we left I asked a woman member of staff to speak to the Manager. They said that they were the assistant manager. I explained my complaint basically if when seated we were told about 45 minute delay we would have left. Again no mention of food delay when I ordered drinks. Assistant Manager said she was sorry for delay but one of the chefs had to leave work due to his partner going into labour. I don't think that is good customer service telling me about their staffing issues rather than dealing with my customer complaint. No recompense was offered. It spoilt our lunchtime. We will not be...
