Aesthetically the Rhyd-y-Pennau inn is pleasing, the interior design acknowledges it's heritage as a cross roads Inn (quite literally in the name "The fork of the heads", referencing the very fork or intersection in which it is positioned), whilst also keeping itself fairly modern. On entre to the inn, one finds themselves in a quote bar, filled with locals watching whichever game is on that evening.
To the left you will enter the restaurant section and this was the beginning of our troubles that night. The staff seem quite undertrained, which is fine for a side of the road inn which most people seem to have lunch, but for the evening meal, we found ourselves feeling quite awkward when the staff seemed to had no clue what they were doing.
One of our party's drinks arrived wrong, and when we we picked our meals, staff had no clue what the meal of the day was, and we overheard them bickering about what to do. One member of our party was told the pie of the week was a steak and ale pie, whilst another member was asking do you want chips with the their meal which was supposed to arrive with chips.
This is but one example of the slight awkwardness and unprofessionalism demonstrated by staff.
The food arrived fairly quickly which we were pleasantly surprised, having only ordered no more than ten minutes prior. However, we could easily tell that the food was not fresh. They sent out the wrong pie, a stake and kidney pie which was cold and rock solid in some places and quite hot with gooey pastry in others. This has clearly been frozen prior to being reheated.
Fellow members of our party were also not incredibly satisfied with their meals, the lasagne was overly tomatie, the mash tasted cheap. However, a noticeable exception to all this were the sausages, which were incredible.
This is not to say that the food isn't great. The food would make a great pit stop on the road in a pitch, it is not unpleasant , simply that it is low quality meant for the type of traveller who is far too hungry...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMyself & group of friends stayed locally for a few days. We wanted to get some food on the day of arrival and this place was within a walking distance. We never made it inside. We were challenged straight away about not wearing masks. There were a few problems about this: It was the day when Welsh announcement about compulsory indoor masks, we never saw it due to travel time, unpacking, etc. Ladies were quite rude from the get go and never explained this. You aren't supposed to challenge anyone about their masks.
We left our masks in the house and wearing masks in restaurants in England was not compulsory at the time. This should have been explained by the ladies who have "greeted" us.
I have explained to the ladies that I am exempt due to my medical condition. They asked me for proof. What sort of proof? Lanyard. Anyone can print one out, and according to rules - I am not required to wear one. I don't feel comfortable advertising to everyone that I have a medical condition, this is a very delicate subject. According to law - this falls under discrimination due medical condition. The rules and laws are clear, how can you prove to servers in the restaurant that you have a medical condition that makes wearing a mask difficult? Are they qualified to assess my condition?
Absolutely terrible treatment, rude, unpleasant. I wonder if it also had something to do with our foreign accents but I can't say for sure.
Really, really sad and disappointing start of our holiday in this beautiful,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreGood if you like cheap and cheerful that is actually not cheap or cheerful. Amiable staff, but possibly the worst burger Iāve ever had. Cheap, frozen microwave-quality meal, similar to what youād expect from a burger van or at a funfair but soooo expensive and overpriced... Which is a shame because clearly they have a good grill! The bacon that came on the burger was lovely. Chips were borderline underdone and the āhomemadeā coleslaw clearly came out a packet and was weirdly warm? The food was so bad it made me feel like I was Gordon Ramsey on an episode of kitchen nightmares. The burger patty was grey-brown, moribund, and Iām sure it had been frozen, then microwaved then chucked on the grill. I donāt think the food has agreed with my guts.
We stopped in on our way down the coast thinking it looked like a nice country pub and the smell of the grill and the big ādogs welcomeā sign as we drove past lured us in. Plenty of parking and a play park out the back, a lovely little sun trap! Could be so much better with a bit of love and serving actually fresh food - rather than ultra processed, microwaved cr*p!
Also no real ale on draught.
Tl;dr The staff were all very friendly and attentive but the food was...
