My previous reviews of the Star have been very positive so it's with much regret that this review is not so positive. We have been visiting the Star for some months now and previously never disappointed. Unfortunately last Sunday 19th Nov we were very disappointed with our lunch. The carrots and swede were lacking in flavour and there was very little cheese on the cauliflower. The gravy was very salty and the roast potatoes were not freshly cooked and hard to cut with the knife. The Yorkshire pudding was flat like a pancake and again no flavour. Also there was no cabbage which we had on previous occasions, instead we had red cabbage which is a strange one for us as we've never had that on a sunday lunch before and definitely won't be having it again.Between the 5 of us we had Turkey and Beef and both were very nice along with a lovely mash.If I had to mark the meal out of 10 it would be a 4 just because of the mash and meat.My wife questioned if they had changed chefs but was assured it was the same chef as previous visits.Personally we were not convinced. We have had many a nice lunch during the week so shall be visiting again but definitely not for...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA Disappointing Return to The Star for Sunday Lunch... Our recent Sunday lunch experience here was unfortunately a significant letdown, mirroring a previous negative encounter. Eighteen months ago; we had attempted to dine here for Sunday lunch, but despite having a table booked, we were inexplicably seated at a coffee table, which prompted us to leave without ordering - how do you eat Sunday lunch at a coffee table? We decided to give the place another chance today, hoping for a vastly improved experience. Regrettably, our optimism was misplaced. If you're seeking an exceptional Sunday lunch, this is NOT the place to find it. The meal was, in a word, dreadful. The most significant issue was the beef, which was incredibly toughāto the point of being almost inedible. The rest of the lunch was, at best, mediocre, offering nothing to elevate the meal. Service throughout our visit was similarly average, failing to compensate for the culinary shortcomings. We left feeling profoundly disappointed and, given these two poor experiences, it's highly unlikely we'll...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis is a Brains pub and restaurant, so don't expect cheap soft drinks. We chose the deep fried brie wedges on the specials board for our starter; well-cooked, runny and tasty but I would have preferred a redcurrant jelly to the sweet chilli sauce.
I chose the herb crusted lamb rump with crushed new potatoes and green beans - all looking a bit brown because of the gravy - I felt a few carrots would have brightened up the plate. But it was delicious - crust was herby and crusty, the meat cooked pink, not bloody, as I like it and the potatoes buttery and herby. It was not a small meal, there was plenty for a big appetite and my husband also enjoyed his sizeable chicken meal from the menu.
The pub was quiet (7:30pm on a hot Sunday) with several other couples eating. The layout is great, with "nooks" and fairly private seating areas, but plenty of space at the bar. All the staff we had reason to speak to were well-spoken, cheerful, helpful and polite.
Cost for two-course meal for two, with soft drinks (J2O with extra soda) just shy of £40. Expensive,...
