First time visiting this pub, as we looked for somewhere to eat on a Saturday evening, after a day spent walking in the area. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming as we settled into the back bar at the side of the splendid log fire. They have a good range of drinks, and the wines we chose hit the spot perfectly. The menu offered standard pub fare, alongside a variety of more unusual, home-prepared meals. The meat, in particular, is sourced from a small local butcher, and if my meal is any indication, the quality is superb. Even the slight delay in serving one of our party was handled so well by the staff that it failed to detract from the experience at all. The evening was rounded off by a live singer, who proved to be so entertaining that we stayed far longer than we intended. Read more4 of us went walking in the nearby Caesar’s Camp and Rowhill Nature Reserve. We booked for lunch at The Royal Arms.
We were offered a choice of indoor or outdoor seating - as the temperature was in the twenties, we chose outside in the slightly unkempt garden - a fact which didn't bother any of us one little bit!
Service was very attentive, and the landlord happy to crack a joke or two, great choice of beers (well kept cellar obviously) and proper food....nothing pretentious just good food , very well cooked and massive portions.

Beside this the stuff is ridiculously slow. Having to wait 40 min for 4 pints on a Saturday game just shows how unprepared and incompetent they are and a complete let down for the euros given how they barely had any business...
