We were staying locally to the pub last weekend and popped in for a quick meal based on the overall good reviews. It was a disappointing visit. We weren't sure whether to wait to be seated or find our own seats and as we waited at the bar the barman didn't acknowledge us or greet us and the waitress who walked past similarly paid no attention, it must have been obvious we weren't sure where to go. Once seated, the table had been laid with fresh napkins and cutlery but was sticky with glass marks. When we asked for it to be wiped it was brushed down with dry blue roll. Even in non-covid times this would be poor practice but in the current climate I'd expect some sort of sanitiser to be used, and really why wasn't this done when the table was re-set. Main courses arrived quite promptly so no issues there but puddings were a bit disastrous. My partner ordered vegan ice cream, then was told they couldn't find it. No problem, these things happen but it wasn't removed from the bill (it was once we pointed it out, but it should have been taken off straight away) I had the mini selection of puds and have to admit to being really disappointed. The bread and butter pudding dippers appeared to have been deep fried, bits were crunchy, others were just greasy, completely unpleasant. The profiteroles were stuck together and hadn't defrosted properly and were more like filled American style doughnuts than profiteroles. Overall the staff appeared uninterested and like they'd rather be anywhere else. We all have off days but a better attitude when working in hospitality is helpful. Yes some of these things are nit picky but they could be very easily addressed to give a much...
Read moreThe White Hart On The Green re-opened in September 2015 following a refurbishment from new owners after lying fallow since closed down by the previous owner at the start of the year.
I gave it a few weeks for the novelty to die down before taking my youngish family for a Sunday evening meal. First impressions were good, the previous owners had already done much to update the pub but these had been enhanced upon and gave a sense of style as we entered.
The dining area is separate to the bar and thus you can dine in peace and quiet away from the main hub-bub of the bar. The furniture and decoration was very nice and tables nicely spaced so you don't feel crowded unlike other establishments. The staff were young but well spoken and polite.
The main disappointment came with the availability of the food. We were on the cut down Sunday menu with the focus on the roast dinner but neither my wife's first choice of Fish Pie was available nor did they have any steak! Also they had run out of chocolate brownies from the Kid's menu so everyone in the party did not get at least one element of the meal that they had initially selected.
The food was served reasonably quickly and had a home cooked feel. Although as most places portion sizes with respect of the main meal were on the small side. The food was well priced mains ranging from £8 to £15 and an excellent value children's menu of £4 for a main and dessert.
I will give it another go and given may feel to up my review to 4 stars if the food on the menu is...
Read moreNot sure what's happened to this pub since Christmas. It's always been our go to due to good value menu, lovely staff and a good atmosphere?? That's ALL changed now.
Our main was served with our starter! We were asked if it was ok by the waitress - but were we really going to say no and have our food sitting under warming lamps for 20 mins? As it was one of the steaks was overcooked but still bleeding onto the plate. Some of the tomatoes and chips tasted of fish - not great especially when no one in our party had even ordered fish!
The wine list was depleted - hardly any choice of white, French wine and the cokes had so much ice in them they tasted watered down we couldn't tell the diet from the full.
One of the deserts was served with ingredients missing. When it was queried they told us that they didn't have the little xtras but took it back to the kitchen to add the ice cream. It came back with everything that was supposedly not available back on the plate.
We were splitting the bill. And while at the bar trying to complete the payments one waitress pushed in front of the young lady who was finishing our payments, to serve her customer! Without a word of apology to her colleague or ourselves! Then proceeded to try to belittle her colleague in front of us when she queried it. Our waitress was totally embarrassed. I felt sorry for her. Disgusting behaviour by her colleague.
Might give this pub one last go, as its convenient for us friends to meet up. Hopefully it was a one off, bad night at the office?!...
