What an odd pub! Visited when there was a wake on so that didn't help much but you do feel like you are visiting the home of an elderly relative with all it's nooks and crannies and odd collections. It is perfect for a quick pint and a look at some old pubs can be. Limited opening hours, see the photo. If you're not expecting much and want an old worldy, step back in time then this is your place. If you prefer those publico type places, then thank goodness this type of place exists!

My daughter and 2 grandchildren took me there last Saturday night for a fathers day meal .the food was fantastic, steak and all the trimmings .Best steak I've had for many years .reasonably priced .Great choice of beers ,Madri lager was great ,left a ring all the way down the glass .very polite and helpful staff .10 out 10 all round .

Popped for a visit remembrance Sunday, had a great chat with landlady, choice of ales from 370p !, ciders, bottled drinks, log fire going nicely, it's a step back in time. highly recommended

I cannot gush enthusiastically enough about this beautiful, unspoiled pub. I had planned a day of pub exploration in North East Dartmoor (taking in Belstone, Sticklepath and South Zeal) and of the 5 pubs I visited on that day - all of which worthy of some merit in their own right - this was far and away the best.

Wonderfully preserved interior, with an open fire, full of nik-naks, and details of yesteryear there because they always have been (like soda siphon bottles on the bar). A main bar room, with quieter lounge bars either side, one of which has a bar billiards table. Deightful friendly locals and staff. Beer served directly from stillage behind the bar, and also a local cider on tap.

I can't really think of any way in which this pub could be better, and I hope it continues to stay exactly as it is now for many...

As part of our quest to visit every pub on Dartmoor, my partner and I popped in for a pint one lunchtime. We had already eaten so we didn't order food. I feel a bit bad about giving an "average" rating as the lady behind the bar was very welcoming and friendly. However, despite a roaring fire, the pub was very cold, and very dated. This may well attract as many people as it puts off, but it was not for me to be honest. Having said all that, there were an awful lot of interesting books and photos dotted around - we came home and ordered one of the books from Amazon (A guide to every pub on Dartmoor. A bit late as we are about halfway round!). If you like history (which I do), and a cold, olde-worlde environment (which I don't), then this...
