Balcarres Arms — Restaurant in Wigan

Where to start...

Upon arrival we were greeted by an unfriendly, foul looking / smelling deteriorating building and an unfriendly waitress / 'chef'. Before ordering food we sat down with a pint of Carlsberg which had a distinct peppery taste and what looked to be dirt around the outside of the glass.

After asking for a change of lager the waitress begrudgingly agreed at an extra cost of 30p... As the starters arrived the first choice soup of the day vegetable was one of Heinz finest tins as we noticed upon departing the pub later. Starter Standard = Poor.

The mains arrived, a Gammon and a brunch was ordered, both of which appeared to have been left in the oven around 45 minutes too long. The brunch was then split in to two piles - Yes and No. The stack on the No side was much larger than the Yes pile which included just fries (just about) and beans. The gammon was burnt, Eggless, and poorly presented items of which identity was unable to tell. I'd have a guess at a pineapple but not 100%, they went in to the No pile.

An overall experience I want to quickly forget and advise people against going, not just due to the standard of food but the 1 hour + wait for the food even though we were the only 2 people in the pub. The customer service is as bad as any around.

STAY AWAY...

I came hear on my wedding day for a family meal before we went to our evening venue in December 2021, was very dissapointed. Frozen basic food and didn't have half the stuff what was on the menu. Staff was ignorant and rude, they was moving tables and balloons away before we had even finished eating as they had another party on, just completely rude, won't be going their again. I actually had to walk out of the premises due to feeling pushed out by management, I had to stand outside for 20 minutes until we could go to our venue, with two young kids on a busy main road in my wedding dress. Not impressed.

P. S to add onto that, I definately was not informed of another party, otherwise I wouldnt have gone there to start with. No extra decorations was put up at all, these was already in place for christmas am very dissapointed at your reply. Staff was rude and using bad language behind the bar, that's not the way I speak in front of young children but you might be different. We was already crammed in like sardines, so for you to suggest for us to sit somewhere else with my wedding dress on? Where was I supposed to fit? in the loos with all 30+ guests and 2 children.

I will definately not be attending again until its under...

The Balcarres Arms An absolute gem. Been there today 1.30pm. 8 of us pre booked a table in the lovely Beer Garden We have all been up at crack o’ dawn to marshal on the 36th Annual Charity Bike Ride in aid of The Christie Hospital 2,000+ bike riders, raises an annual average of £30,000 So. Duty done Ravenous all …. Repair to the Balcarres pub for refreshment. We were not disappointed From excellent beers, wines, alcohol free- they’ve got it all , and at decent prices. Whether you want a lite bite, one course, starters and mains, they’ve got that all too. And. A Sunday lunch to make weekends worthwhile. I’ve included as many pictures as possible But, a 5 Star experience, everyone loved it. We’ll be back again next year, if not sooner than that Gets a 10 from...
