29th JANUARY 2025. ‘Wandering Wednesday’ this week took Hubster Neil and I to an absolute diamond of a hidden gem….. ‘The Nevison Country Inn’ which is in Leigh, it’s an old untouched Country pub, not many of them left and it like a pub should be, locals stood at the bar and very welcoming.….. I was a little dubious at first looking on their website because of the low prices, in comparison to other pubs and restaurants that we have visited previously….. I was TOTALLY wrong…. The food was out of this World, EVERYTHING served in this little Gem is all homemade and you can really tell the difference, they were the best ‘proper’ chips we’ve ever had and they tasted exactly like my Nanna Smyth used to make….. I’ve found the next best to her chips and that’s saying something🥰.
We went straight to entrées; We both had the same: ‘Brown Cow Pie’, with proper chips, the veg was cabbage and sliced carrots, both cooked perfectly al dente. The Pie was packed with thick chunks of braised steak, it fell apart, so lean, no fat at all and it literally melted in your mouth, covered in thick rich gravy and covered with a beautiful short crust pastry top….the plates were full of generous portions. We had a bucket of salt and pepper proper chips to share, along with Pepsi Max to wash it down. The two young Ladies serving us, Milan and Sienna were professional, had impeccable manners, they were rushed off their feet as it was lunchtime but always had a smile, they definitely know their jobs and do it very well. Behind the scenes is a very big thank you to the chefs….. your food is amazing, no room for improvement as it’s already perfect. We have found this hidden gem and will be back very soon, I would strongly recommend you book a table beforehand as the place was full within 10 minutes of us being seated…. It’s up there in our top 5….
So! would we go back?? Without a...
Read moreIf I could rate 0 I would. We booked this pub based on reviews and their choice of gluten free meals, not to mention the fact that everytime we phoned, we could never get a table. My daughter ordered a GF roast dinner, the man behind the bar, possibly manager / landlord told her that she wouldn't be allowed the gravy and Yorkshire pudding, fair enough, but then added, also the beef might not be gf due to the way it was cooked. The lady serving us then advised us said it would be served with chips as they don't do mash in the week. My daughter changed her meal choice to fish style halloumi , the bar lady asked the man what to put it through as, to be told, just put it through as vegetarian, my daughter then explained that she was not vegetarian, she was Coeliac and could be really poorly if she eats gluten. The lady serving then asked, what is gluten, do you have to eat this way for ever? To say we'd lost faith in this establishment is an understatement, we just upped and walked out. Note to management, if you're going to advertise GF, educate your staff and please ensure you can actually deliver, Coeliac is not a life choice, it's an unwanted life changing illness that no one has any control over. Will we ever return to the...
Read moreOne of the best discoveries of the trip! Having left the boat here for 4 days we were eager to get back just to make sure she hadn't sunk.
A longish drive from Sheffield meant we wouldn't want to cook so I called this morning to see what time the kitchen closes - 7pm - it was going to be close but we made it, hungry, with minutes to spare.
So here's the thing, pubs like this can vary significantly and while some are fairly dire, this was a treasure of a find.
The first thing that I noticed was the friendly vibe - a bit like an old fashioned local boozer where you can almost immediately feel at home.
But we came for food!
And we're not disappointed. Chicken melt was huge, Brown Cow Pie outstanding and so obviously home made, with proper pastry, chips and veg - proper veg and the carrots were cooked properly too, not boiled to death soggy mush, but crisp and fresh.
Add some chatty bants and you have a top boozer with fine fodder. So glad we found this place, it's exactly what we needed and the final comment I've really GOT to make is that it's also very,...
