SHUCKS! — Restaurant in Abbeville

My wife and I were hosting 8 of her family from the northern Midwest, and while they had a whirlwind tour of good food that Southern Louisiana, and Acadiana specifically, are known for, we saved the seafood for last. We took our party of 10 to SHUCKS! at dinner time on a Friday during lent and we're prepared for it to be busy; and while it was, we were told it'd only be a short wait. About 10 minutes later we were seated with menus. The service was friendly and attentive despite the packed house. We ordered a Super Sampler of the grilled oysters for the 4 adults to try and every single oyster was a hit. In-laws shared the grilled seafood platter and a bowl of seafood gumbo, both of which were gone within minutes and, I'm told, incredibly flavorful and delicious. My wife ordered the fried seafood platter and similarly enjoyed all of it, though thanks to the generous portion sizes, a lot of it found it's way into a to go box. I ordered the Atchafalaya, which was similarly delicious. We finished the meal off with the bread pudding, which the menu assured me it was not like my mom's. However, I found it to be very similar to hers (which is a great thing). It was soft, warm, flavorful, and soaking in the rum sauce. After the meal, one of the owners made his way over to the table to check on how everyone's experience was and engaged in some friendly conversation, making a wonderful first impression. He talked directly to the adults as well as the kids and had everyone laughing. FOOD & ATTIRE: Good Oyster selection-- thats usually why people come here. The Catfish is excellent. Grab a 'whole' order; its only a couple $ more and still great after a day in the refrigerator. Speaking generally, the food selection is on par with other local joints like Riverfront-- with a more relaxed, casual attire, in contrast to the aforementioned. Very timely order kitchen delivery.

WAIT / PARKING & OTHER: On weekends, you're usually in for a wait, but patrons can grab a drink at the [inside] bar and mingle outside. Friendly bar and wait staff. Parking is to be desired, but "across-street" options are usually available. Traffic is light to moderate and signaled, so you won't be jammed up arriving or departing. Handicap access & parking is available; the establishment seems quite accommodating in this regard.

Shucks is always packed with locals, and that is always a good sign. Expect to wait when you come, grab a beer and wait, it’ll be worth it.

Raw Oysters on the Half Shell - some of the best oysters around! Always clean and fresh, sweet and salty!

Traditional Oysters - Served with garlic butter & topped with grated Romano & Parmesan cheese - the traditional oysters are definitely my favorite cooked oysters here.. I tried the other ones but nothing can be compared to this simple, buttery, garlicky oysters!

Strips & Claws- Half crispy fried Catfish, half fried Crab Fingers - these crispy catfish and crab fingers are the best app you can get.. you may want to order more than one order.. its going to be a favorite.

Fried Seafood Platter - Fried Oysters, Shrimp, Catfish, Stuffed Crabs, Stuffed Shrimp, Oyster Boulette - I feel like the seafood platter was good, but was not a big fan of the stuffed items on here

FISH PLATE (pictured) - I forgot the name of the dish, but the fish was very tender and the butteriness from the sauces was very delicious
