Champs Barbeque — Restaurant in Alabama

I’ve been here for lunch a few times on the weekend and been meaning to post a review but forgot about it. This quaint little restaurant may look like a basic cinder block building on the outside but once you step in, you are greeted by friendly “hellos” and “welcomes”. This family owned business is obviously rooted in religious faith and appreciative of what they have been blessed with as the walls of the restaurant are covered with many religious artifacts and verses. The menu is relatively small, yet with plenty of options for everyone. I typically go with the barbecue pork sandwich with the sauce on the side and onion rings, both of which are delicious. The pork is tender and the sandwiches are packed full of meat. I generally get my sauce on the side so the taste of the smoked pork is not overwhelmed by too much sauce. I was introduced to Champs at a recent Bluegrass festival where Champs was the food vendor. The BBQ sandwich was so good (and generous) that I decided to hunt them down!

Not far from where I live, but not in the direction I usually travel. I have eaten at Champs several times and took a guest on one trip. They open Tuesday thru Saturday at ten-thirty and remain open on Thursday and Friday until seven.

Ribs are big and meaty and all three times I've ordered ribs I carried some home! Side items are WAY better than you'd expect. Mac-n-Cheese is a standout! Baked beans, slaw and potato salad super good. Pulled pork plate with two sides of a generous plenty and I can't comment on desserts because I'm full before I get that far!

Friendly owners will greet you by name the second or third visit. Great people; great food; plenty of room to sit and eat.

I tried Champs for the first time today and I must say it was a good choice. The customer service, Oh my! Nothing but smiles and greetings from everyone as soon as you walk in. Got to love southern hospitality. I got the bbq sandwich, mac n cheese, baked beans, coleslaw, and banana pudding. The sandwich was full of meat and good. I could only eat less than half lol. All the sides were delicious. I received the coleslaw by mistake but it was a delicious one lol. The mac n cheese whew let just say I love mac n cheese and I would definitely order again. The bake beans were good also and had pieces of meat simmered into it. I was too full o keep eating but I did take a spoon of the banana pudding for this review.
