I have been a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa and this was my first, and last, time I go to Nick's. As soon as I entered the 150 square ft dining area, I realized that the 35 people present were packed in, like sardines. I had heard about Nick's steaks, about how good they were, but soon realized, that was far from the truth. I ordered the 18-20oz t-bone steak, cooked to medium well. When I ordered, I did not realize that I would have to scream at my wife to have a conversation because of the 12 drunk people yelling at each other about past glory. My steak could not come fast enough, and when it finally did, I saw that there had not been any, none, not one bit of seasoning put on. I made my first cut, took a bite and my intuition proved correct. I had to drown my steak in sauce just to swallow the meat. I consider myself a steak connoisseur and this was by far the worst, least tasteless steak I have ever had. The people who rated the steaks great at Nick's have never been to a real steakhouse like, Stagecoach Steakhouse in Townsend Tn, or The Eagle's Nest in Socorro NM and because they have not been, their rating and review clearly is not intellectual. To top off our experience, a second drunk group, were sitting our our vehicle when we were leaving. One thing is for sure, apparently you need to be drunk to enjoy a...
Read moreFirst of all, Nicks In The Sticks is not just a dive or "hole-in-the-wall eatery", it is a cultural experience and specifically a significant part of being a STUDENT at the University of Alabama! The "drinks" are called "Nicademuses" (rum, gatorade, more rum, lime juice, water and lemon juice), they serve steaks wrapped in bacon, potatoes ONE way, onion rings and they have TWO kinds of dressing Thousand Island or the "white dressing". The waiters are as much entertainment as they are servers....and the entertainment is seeing how people who are wound to tight, or don't belong in Tuscaloosa, or the south for that matter, react to their casual way of service and incredible "math" skills!!! When I think about watching one of these guys dealing with some snobby middle aged lady who thought when she walked from the muddy parking lot into a rounded cornered shallow-ceiling, crowded little restaurant that has stood the test of time, but shows her age, that she was walking into Fleming's, or Bone's, or Ruth's Chris Steak House, while sucking down those Nicademuses from a Styrofoam cup I still laugh out loud!!! If you aren't laughing, you are the joke, and truth be told,...they don't want you to...
Read moreI’m a local born and raised in tuscaloosa: everyone has went on about this place. Finally went there after work with two other people. When we got there we got a table got drinks and food. Our waiter was great very nice and the place wasn’t jammed full either until halfway through our meal it was loud and they kept cramming people in. The food was meh I’ve had much better steaks at other places for sure! We were going to order another drink when this woman comes over and tells us we need to go so she can use our table….she was the owner of the restaurant. There were like 30 college kids outside waiting to come in and she said that’s how she makes her money we needed to go ahead and pay and leave so she could have our table. Mind you we were still ordering and spending our money on her restaurant we weren’t just sitting there occupying a table. I’ve never been treated like that in my life. She wasn’t polite about it either she basically said get out I need the table. This place is expensive for subpar food and it’s way too small to try and house the people it serves. This is a college kid hangout. I’d find...
