North Coney Island — Restaurant in Alpena Township

We ate here on a Saturday morning, arriving just before 11am with plans to grab a quick bite to eat and head off for a packed day’s schedule. Upon entering we sat at an open booth and were greeted by a waitress almost immediately. She took our drink order and brought them fairly soon after. We ordered two breakfast dishes, one being corned beef hash with two extra eggs, all poached. The waitress asked how we wanted the eggs cooked (soft, medium, or hard) and we ordered soft. After waiting 40 minutes we were served and the waitress put down the corned beef hash dish with eggs, saying, “It looks like an egg or two broke…do you mind?” We said no because we’d waited so long and we were antsy to leave, but when we are charged for two extra eggs and asked specifically how we wanted them cooked they should be flawless. At least two eggs were hard poached. On top of that the bottom of the corned beef hash was burnt to all get out! The orange juice was the worst I’ve ever tasted. The only complaint I have about my omelette was the amount of cheese. Otherwise my meal was average. Our waitress never came back to ask how the food was. We suspect she knew it was crap on a plate. This is a great little hole in the wall local place to get good food and service. My wife and I were passing through Alpena on a trip from Florida to the UP of Michigan. An Alpena local suggeted North Coney Island for lunch and they could not have been more right. I had never had a coney before and I will not say what it's like becuase I think they get mad on the east side of Michigan If you compare it to anything else. It was delicious and so were the fries that came with it. My wife got the biscuits and gravy with a chocolate malt. We love this dinner! Great food and service. We only wish they were open later! Today we had blt with fries, corned beef hash with scrambled eggs rye toast, and eggs and bacon!
