First, I am hangry and PO'ed writing this. I would not want to attempt to eat the food again at South Kelly Grill if it was the last food on earth. Yes, dramatic, but wait, I will explain.
We arrived on a Saturday around 11:30 am, they were packed, evidenced by the full parking lot. Great, they must be good! We went in and had about a 15 minute wait to be seated. They did seat two tops out of order, forgivable, but they also had no signup list either. They sat two two tops in rapid succession and maybe three minutes later sat us and another two top. They then sat a group of seven.
By the time we got our food, the two two tops seated before us had come and gone. The two top seated after us got their food before us as well at the group of seven. We asked about our food and was told it would be right out. We had already been waiting over an hour. The waitress did not ask me what kind of potatoes I wanted, nor what kind of toast my husband wanted.
When we did finally get our food, it was inedible. I ordered the Crab Egg Benedict. The eggs were completely hard and the hollandaise sauce was cold, not room temperature, it was cold. I sent it back. I wasn't paying $14.00 for cold sauce and hard eggs. I told my husband to go ahead and eat his meal, I would wait. They asked me if I wanted something else, no, I wasn't waiting any more time to eat.
My husband ordered the Black and Bleu omelette. The toast he got was dry and chewy. The omelette had something in it that had the most foul taste he couldn't eat and I spit out the bite I had. The foul taste stayed with me until I got home and brushed my teeth. The meat in the omelette was was over-cooked, dry and looked like something you would eat on the trail in an old western. I am not sure what was so foul tasting in the omelette, could have been the meat or the mushrooms. I am uncertain that if my husband had actually eaten the omelette that he wouldn't have suffered later.
Their excuse for everything was we have three new people in the kitchen. So? That is no excuse for letting food that disgusting leave the window. At no time did they ask what they could do to make it right, they just kept parroting about the new employees in the kitchen. While this place is still rather new, they have been open several months and should have the kinks worked out. However, I am not sure the issues with my food were all the fault of the kitchen in that it certainly could have come from not getting the food out to the table by letting it sit too long in the window. But the foul taste was certainly not the waitresses fault.
My husband is an Executive Chef and I am a pretty good cook myself. We have had some pretty mediocre food in and around Vallejo and American Canyon, but there has never been any food we simply couldn't or wouldn't eat because it was so unpalatable. We know our expectations are probably higher than most people, but this was the worst food we have ever had. The worst. Denny's in Vallejo is a much better choice for...
Read moreAt first glance this place seem very welcoming and the menu offered what appeared as tasty choices. However, the hostess sat my family and I at a corner table where a plathera of flies kept flying near and around our food. Disgusted by this, I requested if we could be moved but the host did not accommodate us. Instead she began to squish the flies against the window and try to tell us that she killed most of them. Yuck!!! Since our food was already served we had to uncomfortably eat our meal while covering it from what looked like a fly infestation. By this time I had lost my appetite and instead asked for the check. My meal was overpriced and lacked flavor almost like they used egg substitute. My moms salad was bland and the coffee tasted old and bitter. I was so digusted by the flies and the hostess squishing them on the window, that I felt sick to my stomach after l left the restaurant. I would not recommend this place. It looks pretty but they need some pest control. Yuck!!!
To comment on the owners response... It would be more respectful if you would be a little more humble in accepting that squishing flies near anyone's food never sounds appetizing, even if you are near a vineyard. This act is outright disgusting! I should mention that this was an indoor table.
Also, thank you for noticing that we eat most our food, we we went to your establishment because we were hungry. I paid for the food with my hard earned money, I never asked your establishment for any giveaways. We paid for our meal at full price no discounts or coupons.
You mentioned that you offered to move us which was not true. I pointed out an empty table under a ceiling fan which would have helped combat the fly situation, but you said "no", because it was already taken. If you knew that the flies were so bad near the table where YOU sat us, it should have been in your outmost interest to relocate us immediately. Instead you offered to move us to a different area of the restaurant after we had already started eating and were almost done with our meal.
I would have had a better opportunity to rate your world class coffee and homestyle cooking more fairly, if I had not been so distracted by the flies or by you. Everytime you squished a fly against the window with a napkin using your hands and exclaimed "I think I got all of them" was just a reminder of how unprofessional you are and how unhygienic your establishment was.
Perhaps if you had introduced yourself as the owner, I would have been able to give you my review in person and not blast you on the internet.
Lastly, I am sorry if my review came to you as an offense, instead as an opportunity for growth.
Not really sure what you meant by "that was two weeks ago", but for your customers sake, I hope that in two weeks time you were able to get pest control to help you combat the flies living in your restaurant next to the vineyard. ...
Read moreI haven’t been here in years. It was café 29. The last time I was here. I was looking forward to coming here and enjoying the food. The food was awesome. I had the chicken fried steak which was hot and delicious well done hashbrowns nice and crunchy biscuit instead of toast lots of butter awesome! My son had the French toast combo with sausage and eggs the food was great. The customer service on the other hand was not so great. It was an older woman, braided blond hair, glasses with blue rims. The receipt says Michelle and she didn’t have a name tag on, and I didn’t ask her name. First of all she sat us at a dirty table, and when I asked her to clean it, she gave me an attitude. I still smiled and said thank you, she asked if we’d like something to drink, I told her I would have a Michelada. She said there was no tahin I said well can I just have salt she said we have no salt. I looked at the salt shaker and said well. I have salt right here lol 🤦🏼♀️ so I asked for hot water with lemon it. there was something red in the cup and I asked her to change it she just gave me a look took the cup and walked away.(maybe she was having a bad day I don’t know.) I ended up ordering a Modelo. I asked her if I could have a lemon with it. She looked at me and said, is there anything else that you need? I said well if I do need anything I’ll let you know. Thank you. she bought our food. And I asked if we could have some napkins. She looked at me and walked away maybe like four minutes later came back with one napkin and I said thank you. I’m sorry to bother you. FYI there were very few people in the place I just can’t believe the service we received. I can take my money anywhere and spend it yes $45 is not a lot of money to spend on breakfast with beer. Unfortunately I won’t be going back even though the food...
