Ambrosia Donuts — Restaurant in Ankeny

Ambrosia doughnuts are fantastic! However, my service experiences are poor at best. My 17 year old son picked up 24 in total. We requested 6 long johns, 6 cronuts (no one makes them like they do here anymore and they are sooooo goooood ), 6 vanilla frosted bismarks cream filled, and 6 maple frosted bismarks cream filled. The order was fine except; they were short one bismark so they gave us a long John filled, and only 3 of the 11 bismarks were filled. We paid for filling! I believe we were overcharged in the first place. I called and the owner said she'd give us 6 at no charge to make things right. My husband went back the next weekend to pick up the 6 free bismarks and the person up front gave him two boxes of doughnuts and charged him for them. He told her that it wasn't his order because there shouldn't be any charge and we shouldn't have that many. He asked her to check with the owner and she headed back but turned around half way and she came back telling him this was our order and he had to pay for it. The owner wouldn't come out and verify or apologize like most would and do. My husband brought the doughunts home and when I realized what had happened I called the owner back. She told me we got the wrong make up order and she accused us of making the mistake and how she had to redo the other order again. I asked her about our redo and she said it was our fault we got the wrong order. I told her we told the person up front and how the person wouldn't hear of it and charged us for the order. I told her we paid for the wrong order that was supposed to be a redo at no charge because we were charged for filling we didn't get. She said it was our fault and complained that it was our fault she had to redo the other order. I told her it was her staff that she needed to have a chat with because they weren't doing their job. She stood by her staff and refused to make things right. So, as good as her product is, the service gets the poor mark because it's not right to treat customers...

These are, hands down, the best doughnuts I have ever tried. I'm fat, I cooked professionally for 20+ years, and I've lived in four states. It's safe to say I've tried quite a few doughnuts in my life. I've even made a few myself. However, every single doughnut I've tried at Ambrosia has been arguably the best in its class. Their glazed yeast doughnuts, cronuts, different cake doughnuts- all of them are the best. They will even custom fill long Johns with your filling of choice to order.

Here's the thing, they aren't relying on excessive toppings or crazy combinations- no maple bacon voodoo nonsense. They don't need the Hurts Donut schtick. Just perfectly executed, simply fried and garnished, normal doughnuts done right every time. It takes some skill to cook something as simple as sugar-glazed fried yeast dough and make it shockingly good every time.

The quality of ingredients are evident. There is no unpleasant film left on the roof of your mouth from the cheap shortening other doughnut chains use (looking at you, Dunkin). No need for crazy embellishments other than a little maple or chocolate glaze, maybe some sprinkles for the kids, perhaps pumpkin in the cake doughnut batter for the Fall. They just do it right. Get a cronut while you're there. If you don't agree with me that it's the best, I'll bet it's in...

I honestly only liked the Maple Donuts vfo Walmart Supercenters and Powdered Strawberry Filled Donuts From Kripsy creme and never like any other filling in donuts. I've tried the Fluffy filling and not the custard yet and it is truly amazing. The Fluffy filling honestly makes the Donut itself taste better it makes the whole donut taste Fluffy and Soft with no change in taste but a hint of vanilla if you chew it softly trying to taste the fluffy filling and I truly never like any filled donuts exept the ones I spoke of from Kripsy Creme. AND you pick the Donuts you want I like colored ones Blue/Pink etc. And The maple they have is great and you can get it like it is orrrrr, ask for the Fluffy Filling Or Custard to Put in the Donut you Want and Fill it Right before you get it making it truly the Freshest Donut ever. This place is one of A kind and the only place I've ever seen that do this and they arr amazing. Smiling happy to see people and they truly brighten your day I recommend this place to everyone 5☄️s.
