I've been visiting Austin's since it was the location 30(?) years ago that had to be torn down because of the highway being built. I don't make it out to this location often but I was visiting Altoona today and made the trip to Tipton to treat myself. Everyone was very friendly and as someone in food service for 35+ years I know the cost of business has never been higher but I think my long standing love affair is over. I think nostalgia won out over flavor and value the last time I was in a handful of years ago and I see now that I'm not missing what I thought I was. While I like my dogs well seared or even charred I get that isn't a thing hot dog places do so I'm not knocking that. But the fry portion and presentation was awful. I was shocked it came in a small plastic cup and I almost thought they forgot the sauce because it was so hard to spot. While the cup had sauce settled in the bottom that did me little good while eating the majority of fries. I've spent far less on subpar dogs and I've paid for gourmet dogs that really weren't worth it. I just think that the options for better value are everywhere and even visiting here infrequently is too often.
And while I didn't get the custard is plain vanilla the only and default flavor or was it an off day? I recall the custard being incredble as a kid but I had no interest in just vanilla during this most...
Read moreIf you want to visit the worst hot dog restaurant in Pennsylvania look no further. Texas hot dogs, lived in Texas all my life and this ain't no Texas hot dog, it's a sales gimmick.
Insides were somewhat clean, dirty tables were the only available when I arrived however.
Hot dogs were absolutely nothing special, loaded with onions? $1 each would be reasonable for these bland hotdogs, I got a chili dog with cheese as well.. same story. Bland and boring.. I've had better gas station hot dogs folks.
Cherry on the icing is the pricing as everyone else has mentioned. $2.00 for a hot dog and add chess $2.30 each. Tiny soda cups and NO REFILLS! I just paid $8 for two hot dogs a small cup of fries (best thing they have) and a sample of soda.
If you want to see how a real hot dog place makes and treats customers visit Brighton hot dog shoppe in cranberry pa. Look at their reviews too, best hot dogs in the state fully loaded with cheese for $1.55 each. This place is a joke, the only thing keeping this place alive is the amusement park and desperate locals, don't make my mistake and ignore the reviews, I regret...
Read moreThe staff who work there are very friendly!! The restaurant is very clean. The food was good but a bit on the expensive side. 4 hotdogs, 1 order of fries and 2 milkshakes was almost $20. A nice treat every once in a while, price wise. The food itself, the fries were very greasy but they were served nice and hot. If you want ketchup, you have to ask for it and they only give you a few packets. I asked for light onions on my hotdog and although they were light compared to what comes on a regular order, they were not "light" by any means. I had to pick some off to eat it. Next time I know to ask for "VERY light" onions :) I ordered a teaberry milkshake and although it was good, it did not have much teaberry flavor to it. Next time, I'll try a different flavor because they had lots listed that...
