We stopped here on the recommendation of a friend. The atmosphere is great. Our lunch was fabulous. Service at the restaurant was good. We purchased some of their bread and cinnamon rolls which we will eat for breakfast tomorrow. They look delicious. After we ate we went next door to get some of their homemade ice cream. The young lady who waited on us for ice cream was nice enough. Here I why they only get 3 stars. I don’t always look at receipts but this time I did. I said, “Ma’am, you made a mistake. The sign for the concrete states ‘includes 1 topping’ and you charged us for the concrete and then charged us for the topping”. I showed her my receipt and her response was, “That’s how I was taught to ring it up”. I said, “clearly you can see that is wrong. You charged us for the concrete and charged us for the topping”. Again the response, “That is how I was taught to ring it up.” I pointed to the menu sign and again, “You see right there it shows $3.25 for medium concrete and wrote underneath includes 1 topping. You charged the concrete and then an additional .75 for the topping.” And believe it or not… with the evidence presented… her response was… you guessed it, “that is how I was taught to ring it up”. In the whole grand scheme of things, the buck fifty isn’t worth the argument. As we sat there eating our ice cream she worked away in the little kitchen area. Every time she looked our way she glared. I got so uncomfortable I had to walk around to get out of the room. Honestly, I’m just disappointed. A most amazing French dip sandwich from Thee Abbey Kitchen in Arcadia, MO. “Real“ roast beef, amazing house-made bread and very melty provolone cheese. I could not have asked for a better sandwich! Oh, and the dip was real “au jus“ from when they cooked their beef, and there were bits of the meat at the bottom of the cup!

This place is truly amazing - not only do they bake all their breads and other goodies, like cinnamon rolls, they also grind their own wheat to use in these items!

Even though it was 4 PM, I asked to get an order of bacon. Their bacon is some of the best I’ve ever had, thick, meaty, smoky, always perfectly cooked, and I just can’t pass it up!

Oh, and, I had to get a sweet treat afterwards! I didn’t want a giant cinnamon roll (or ice cream,m - they have a little ice cream/goodie shop attached to the restaurant!), so I got one of their chocolate chunk-caramel cookies and it was the bomb - a little crunch on the outside, a little chew on the inside and lots of fantastic flavor.

Whenever I am in the area (I took a daytrip to Southeast Missouri to explore all around the Saint Francis Mountains yesterday), I make it a point to stop at the Arcadia Academy and Thee Abbey kitchen!

I have been here several times, and the food has always been excellent, the service is wonderful, and the building is just a cool, old, historic place.
