If you want a fancy dining experience, keep driving. However, if you want good down-home food with warm, friendly service, be sure to stop in at the Blue Hills Cafe. My wife and I stopped in on our way to Prescott Valley, with my mother-in-law, for breakfast and were not disappointed.
Wanda was our server. She is a kind, responsive, and professional server. When my wife mentioned she has a gluten allergy, she offer a gluten-free English muffin, and stated that they would toast it on the flat-top instead of the toaster because of cross-contamination. This, of course, put my wife at ease, knowing they understood food safety as it relates to allergens. I ordered their chicken fried steak with hash browns, two eggs, and a biscuit with sausage gravy. I couldn't finish it all in one sitting. The steak was delicious! They cooked the hash browns to perfection, and they were not greasy. On our next trip to Prescott Valley, I'll order this again and start with the biscuit for sure. Their biscuits are the lightest and moistest biscuits I ever tasted. They are not the typical bone dry biscuits that need gravy in order to choke them down. When we return, I'll ask if I can order a half dozen to take back to Phoenix.
This was our first occasion to eat at Blue Hills for breakfast. I have two recommendations. The first recommendation I could make for their menu would be to offer more in the way of southwest options to spice things up a bit, like chorizo, fresh spicy salsa, chili Colorado, besides your Ortega green chili (which I assume is out of a can). The second would be, offer quality steel-cut oats for your oatmeal instead of the quick instant oats that are slimy. My mother-in-law ordered your oatmeal. This, of course, is a business decision based on demand. Everything else on your menu represents a level of excellence. Your oatmeal should too. But again, this would be based on the demand for oatmeal, as making steal-cut oatmeal takes time (unless you make it overnight in a crock-pot). Steel-cut oats are rich and hearty, especially when you top them with fresh fruits and nuts. You can also increase the price point and the profit margin is crazy good as well for offering an elevated “gourmet” version, since steel-cut oats are very inexpensive and yield a lot of oatmeal per volume of raw oats.
One thing patrons may notice is the steady stream of traffic in this restaurant. Good food and great service are why. While there, we noticed no staff just standing around. Everyone served the customers professionally and with a smile. We look forward to trying the lunch/dinner menu options on our next visit....

Read moreMy husband and I were on a road trip when I looked up good food and found this one. The ratings were already 4.6 stars, so we thought we'd stop in. Cute little dinner, they had a board with specials "March burger of the month". Even though they had lots to choose from on the menu, I decided to try this. It was seat yourself, and the waitress came right over. She took our drink order, attended to other patrons , came right back to us with our drinks, and then took our food order. I know this is a lot of normal detail, but most places are not this well organized. It usually takes a bit for the waitress to come back, and I was impressed right away! The food came out shortly after, too! I thought that it might just be because it was the "burger of the month," but I noticed another couple had sat down about 5 minutes after us, and their food was quick to arrive also. The plate was big, the burger was big with a lot of frys (hot and crisp!) The meat patty was a bit thin and I like mine on the thicker side with a normal burger, however, with the layers of corned beef, sourkraut and Cole slaw, it was a perfect blend of everything!! To top it off, the bill was half the amount we spent the morning before on breakfast for the two of us!! I will definitely return and tell all my...
