NEW 2019 - We were back in town in December 2019. We ate here twice - and that does not include the other two days of leftovers. The Hot and Sour soup is still the #1 soup that I have ever had at a Chinese Restaurant. For once, I did not get the Mongolian Beef (which I compare all other Mongolian Beefs to.) Instead, we tried the Mongolian Tofu - and I now have a new most favorite dish!!! It was to die for - and it is what I ordered both times I went this trip. Prices are still crazy cheap at lunch, and the people there are still great to interact with.
OLD Review - Living in Athens while going to UGA, my wife, our friends, and I ate here a LOT (along with their shop on the east side - not sure if it is still there.) We tried several other places in town for Chinese food, but always came back to Peking.
Now that we live on the other side of the country, we only come back to the area to see family every so often. But in our travel plans, we always budget time to make it to Peking at least once every trip. Not a single time have we ever been disappointed.
The hot and sour soup is spot on, like most always - I have yet to find a restaurant that makes it this good. (There have been a couple of times over the plethora of our visits where it was not so good.) The Mongolian beef is the best I've had here - again not finding any places that make it this good. We also had the Peking fried rice - excellent, as always, vegetable lo mein, vegetable cho mein, and sweet and sour chicken. We were all very full, very happy, and not out a lot of money. Still reasonable priced after all these years.
Trying to budget another evening in Athens to make it back once more...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I visited a few days ago and were sorely disappointed with the quality of the food, and level of service. The orange chicken we received is not in the traditional style. Instead, it was crispy chicken in the shape of meatloaf. The orange chicken sauce was not that, it tasted nothing like it. It was bitter and sour. When we asked our server, he said that is what we ordered and that is what orange chicken is suppose to look and taste like. We disagreed.
Additionally, we ordered lo mein mixed with shrimp. It's an egg noodle dish with mixed vegetables. It's not my personal favorite but my girlfriend enjoys it so we decided to give it a shot. Big mistake. There were no noodles in sight, instead it came with a butt-load of veggies (not that I mind), and chips resembling Mexican tortillas. I thought it was suppose to be lo mein(?) How can a restaurant name their dishes after traditional foods, and serve something totally different. The shrimp tasted like it was frozen and put in a microwave. It had a strange after taste.
Our server never once asked how our meal was, and gave us the check as soon as we asked for to go boxes. We had enough and wanted to leave as soon as possible. We checked out at the front desk and, who we assume to be the manager, seemed only interested in our money and not about our experience. He took the check almost immediately after we filled the tip line, not seeing that we weren't even done signing it. We will not be coming back. Seems like the only thing they do well is...
Read moreI haven't been here since college days a few decades ago. It is just as I remembered it. Not commercialized, but deep China themed decor. While it looked like it did back then, it doesn't look dated or aged. Very clean and a good menu.
We considered individual meals, but this was an opportunity to do family style dishes with a full meal sharing dishes. We chose to get the 3 meal dinner and they were willing to change items for a small fee. (Not unexpected since that price was based on those items.) It still came out better price for what we got.
Sizzling Rice Soup was great! Pot stickers were great. Chicken and Broccoli was great as expected. Before with Broccoli could have been better, but still good. General Tsao was really good, but not super hot spicy. All food came out very hot, almost as if eating at the grill. We actually had to let it cool down some to eat it (which is great and rare). We had Pepsi and to save time she brought a picture so we could keep the glasses full. When we were full, we got To Go boxes and had another meal to take home.
Definitely got our money's worth and enjoyed the experience. They do have buffet stations, but were put out of commission since Cov times. Would love to see them return, but they said no plan for it as this time.
If you want a nice meal this is the place to go. We drove from an hour away just to check it out. I plan to do it again soon. ...
