Your friendly neighborhood donut shop. The owners are very kind and their donuts and kolaches are always fresh and delicious.
You donât go to Fresh Donuts on Thaxton Road because youâre looking for a theme or lofty notions of challenging what exactly a donut shop can be. Youâre not there to pay premium prices for half-baked (or half-fried) vessels to deliver some novel topping or flavor with dubious execution. No, youâre likely there because youâre in the area and your options are limited.
This is not an indictment against the quality to be found at this humble shop nor a cynical jeer at the dedication thatâs at work here. Fresh Donuts deals in the Platonic idea of the donut and they do it remarkably well. The evidence is in the balance of velvety airiness and crispy sweetness in every bite of a classic plain glazed; the captivating ratio of cinnamon to sugar on a cinnamon twist that is never cloying or bland. When the thing you make lines up cleanly with the archetype, anything else becomes a diversion. Sharks have changed relatively little even after millions of years.
While many shops are content to serve glorified pigs-in-a-blanket, Fresh Donuts make their version of Texas kolaches adorned in a soft golden brown bread that melts in your mouth. That same kolache bread, along with croissants, is used to make simple but satisfying breakfast sandwiches as well.
Taste is subjective, often stubborn, sometimes fickle. So donât just take my word for it. Ask any of the locals and passers-by who frequent the establishment and help make Fresh Donuts an integral locus point of the community. One only needs to leisurely nurse an apple fritter at a corner table to witness the mutual connection between the steady parade of customers and the beautiful couple behind the counter.
This is why...

The donuts are super soft and the bavarian cream donut tastes like vanilla pudding. The apple fritters are amazing with a crunchy outside and soft inside. I don't know what it's called, but the bear paw shaped item is amazing as well. It's like a cross between a donut and apple pie. Super delicious. The lady working the counter was also very friendly. P. S. I splurged for my 21st birthday in trying out this new place, was...
Read moreLove this place. Donuts are delicious, no gimmicks like people come to expect now a days. I come in around 5am before heading to work sometimes, and every time I stop by the donuts are being made. They are finishing the glaze or sprinkles or adding the chocolate. I don't know why people say they are not fresh, maybe because they don't wake up till noon. The owners are f n awesome and sweet. I give a five star. This is not Krispy creme, or voodoo donuts. This is a mom...
