Return customer from 7 years ago (they moved to new location farther from ferry terminal since I was there last). If coming by ferry from Seattle, plan to Bike/Lyft/Uber.
I have had pizza all over the country. This is not the best (or even close). We got a meat lovers and veggie gorgonzola (what they are supposedly famous for). Both were hot and fresh. The pizza was "alright" 7/10 and value at a 5/10 once higher price is considered. Reading some other reviews of this place regarding taste is wild to me; some rave about this being the best which I simple do not understand nor agree with.
Price for cinnamon sticks, meat medium, and veggie gorgonzola medium was approximately $56 plus tip.
No drinks were available for purchase. Such an oddity for a by-slice pizza place. This is unacceptable and tantamount to a pizza sin. They had the coolers but we're empty. When asked, the workers did not have a reason for it being empty. It sounded like it has been empty for awhile and no expectations of it being filled. Again, unacceptable.
No indoor seating (old location had it). It is technically advertised as a counter serve place now so I guess that is to be expected now. There is some limited outdoor seating (4ish tables). Good luck getting a spot on a busy day with the other businesses there.
Napkins, utensils, parmesan cheese, and red pepper flakes were not readily available to customers, which are customary for pizza places (especially by-slice places). We received napkins only after we asked for them after the fact. While this is a good environmental sustainability model for carryout (it isn't advertised as sustainable though, this is benefit of the doubt), that doesn't make sense for by-slice place where there is a reasonable expectation people will eat there and not at home. We didn't ask for anything else since the lack of readily accessible of the items listed above gives off the vibe of "go away" (though the workers were nice). Shakers of of parmesan and red pepper flakes would go a long way. So would a sign for napkins/utensils available upon request (at least).
Building is newer and has a green space adjacent to the outdoor for small kids to play in the grass. So it has that going for it.
The smallest pizza size is a medium. If you want a small/personal size you're out of luck. Yes, there is by-slice options, but that is a poor substitute if you want a non standard option.
Cinnamon sticks are the size of a medium pizza. Too much when also ordering pizza for only 2 people. Noting here for awareness since that is not obvious...
Read moreFirst off, the counter staff is very friendly. The place itself is very small with no inside seating--which we didn't find out until we walked in. You place your order for the pizza and then either remain inside or go sit outside at one of their tables with an umbrella over it. It was an especially hot day so the umbrella was welcome.
To my wife and I, the pizza here was another example of wood-fired pizzas being overrated. We ordered the Extreme Pepperoni and the BBQ Chicken, which apparently is one of their "Favorite Chicken Pizzzas".Their crust is thin and a bit soft, which always surprises me with pizzas I've had cooked in those ovens. Why don't they ever turn out like the ones I see on TV that are cooked in those ovens in pizza places in Italy--a little charred but firm a good, chewy texture?
My wife and I love our red sauce on pizza. My wife makes pizza from scratch and she's mastered the crust and the sauces--red sauce, white garlic sauce and a a white aioli sauce. So we know our sauces. And that was the primary weakness of the pizzas we ordered--no sauce. We don't understand the owner's reason for adopting this style, which is not unique to this place.
The Extreme Pepperoni indeed lived up to its name. All that pepperoni flavored the pizza. It had to because there was zero red sauce that I could see beneath the thin layer of cheeses, which seems to be mozzarella and provolone.
The BBQ Chicken pizza was a major disappointment. In addition to lacking the red sauce--or any sauce for that matter--there was almost no actual BBQ chicken on the pizza. The slices of red onion and green pepper far outweighed the bits of chicken on every slice. Since there was almost no BBQ chicken on the pizza, there was only the faint taste of BBQ sauce. I don't know why the owner chose to build a pizza like this but it was wholly unacceptable, although the friends we were with love this pizza.
We did buy their sourdough starter since I'm a big fan of sourdough pizza and sourdough breads and rolls in general--and my wife's a home baker. So that's a nice service for the restaurant and another way to make money. But we found the pizzas disappointing and, given the fact that there's no inside seating, we...
Read moreI was visiting from California with my wife and stopped to get lunch before we were supposed to be at the ferry (we thought we had plenty of time). We ordered our pizza no problem but after waiting 50 minutes we never received it. We saw the owner or manage come in with his daughter and they grabbed a pizza that look very similar to ours and left. When I went to check on why our pizza was taking so long I heard the employees say "he took the pizza so we will have to remake it". Apparently the owner/manager thought our pizza looked so good that he would just take it home leaving his customers to wait even longer then it was supposed to. When I checked on why things were taking so long they were just starting to remake it. We had to get to our ferry so we couldn't really wait any longer. I asked for a refund as well as asked for a couple slices of pizza so we could at least eat something before we left since we hadn't eaten all day. They gave us the refund and and a couple of slices for free. The waitress who took our order was understanding and very nice, but for an owner or manager to walk off with a customers pizza is absurd and a terrible way to run a business. Though the employees were very nice I was baffled how someone in charge could run a business so selfishly like this. How in the world did the owner/manager just decide "oh this pizza looks good, I'll just take it and make a customer wait longer". This blows my mind! Never going back and I would suggest no one going to Bainbridge island try this place. So incredibly baffled by the lack of understanding for...
