I grew up in Bennettsville , but been living in Las Vegas since 1991. I visit the Carolinas about every 2 to 3 years now to see family and friends. I remember when this used to be the Sanitary Cafe and Harry ran the place. He had a small display case with some of his old military stuff in it from when he was in World War 2. I was happy to see the stainless steel wall cover still there behind the counter.
I met a friend of mine for lunch on my way to Myrtle Beach. We've been friends since 3rd Grade ! I had the Country Ham Plate with Mac-n-Cheese , Mashed Potatoes and Gravy , Roll , and Sweet Tea. He had the Patty Melt with Fries. I love getting Country Ham when I come home to visit because we can't get it in Las Vegas. It was good , but I have to say the portion was a little smaller than I expected. The Mashed Potatoes and Gravy was good , but the Mac-n-Cheese I didn't really care for. Sweet Tea was on point.
My friend liked his Patty Melt and fries. He knew our waitress and she was nice enough to take a picture of us. Bennettsville is still the small town community that I remember and grew up in. I would love to see it grow again like many places have even though all the jobs moved away years ago when the factories moved overseas. My father and I walked the streets of Bennettsville everyday after he got off work and we visited many of the shopkeepers after his first heart attack to give him some exercise. He grew up in Bennettsville and never moved as many of the people that he grew up with. Bennettsville was a tight knit community then and I know the ones that I grew up with still have this place in their heart even being thousands of miles...
Read moreI had the Patty Melt with onion rings and my company had the Tomato Bisk with the grilled cheese. The Patty melt came with grilled peppers and onions with pepper jack cheese and chipotle on sour dough bread, It was called a Southwest Patty Melt. However I ordered mine without grilled peppers or chipotle and with Cheddar cheese instead of pepper jack cheese but when it came it had no grilled onions on it either. I told the waitress and she quickly corrected my order. The waitress was wonderful, she was a blonde lady. Incredibly sweet. The onion rings was probably the best I had ever had. My company said that her Tomato Bisk was delicious however the grilled cheese was really small, it was cooked on two pieces of white bread and the whole thing was served to her but the bread itself was just small but all in all it was very good. She also said that they have really good sweet tea. They we're very kind and quick to fix mistakes. I will...
Read moreMy first time in the restaurant and it reminded me of the restaurants we visited as kids. I remember the connected bar stool and the bar. It took me back to my childhood, briefly.
The food was great. I got country ham and a linked sausage. My friend got grits, eggs, and bacon and we both had coffee. The prices were reasonable and the atmosphere was pleasant. You could tell it was a small town diner, with regular customers and they can tell when someone not from there comes in. I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.
The service, order time to getting meal time, has a lot be desired. I had 4 cups of coffee before my meal arrived. That is a long time to sip coffee.
Overall, this is a very good...
