I ordered a cortado, which is an espresso based drink with only about a quarter cup of milk in it. It was great. They had oat milk and steamed it beautifully. I really like to taste the coffee, especially if it is a medium or light roast with complexity, instead of a heavy burnt taste. This one was very subtle and chocolatey. Even though they were busy, the owner took the time To talk about the different roasting styles and how to use my aeropress. I’ve only tried three coffee places in Billings, but this one is by far the best, especially if you’re looking for espresso drinks, like cappuccino, etc. I also ordered the berry crisp, which had a lot of oats, but not enough berries IMHO. So although I rank the dessert only a two or three out of five, this is mainly a coffee place and that was excellent. Another patron told me that the orange scones are great, but they were all out. The atmosphere is outstanding because the store is sort of merged with a plant and flower shop, which is beautiful. The outdoor seating is terraced with lots if plants and is an ideal place to sit on...
Read moreBlack Dog on Poly is one of the best places in Billings to wander indoors, enjoy a perfect mocha (not too sweet) at the perfect temperature (not too hot), visit with a friend, enjoy the neighbors and their dogs (there are always dog treats on hand), pick up some cards or jewelry by local artisans, annnnnd …
Even purchase a perfect succulent! (And I say that as someone who fears plants because I have never been able to keep them alive.) Somehow the owner and his team give you just enough hospitality, warmth, professionalism, and care to give you courage to try new things, too.
I would also like to express particular appreciation for the diversity of humanity that is welcomed at this establishment … old/young, loud/quiet, neurodiverse/neurotypical, alone/in groups. It is truly becoming one of my favorite places to enjoy in Billings and I highly...
Read morePopped into Black Dog Coffee Shop on a quiet morning and had a mocha along with a coffee cake muffin. Both were quite fine, much like what you’d find in most cafés of this type. The mocha was warm and sweet enough, and the muffin had that familiar, just out of the wrapper feel that one comes to expect from a standard coffee outing.
The atmosphere was pleasant, if unremarkable. Of the two staff members present, one was delightfully warm and welcoming, the sort of person who makes you feel you’ve made a good choice by walking in. The other, while polite, gave off the impression they’d rather not be disturbed which, to be fair, is sometimes a mood I understand.
All in all, Black Dog is perfectly serviceable. If you’re nearby and need a caffeine fix, it...
