Full disclosure. I'm a diner junkie. I love diners of all sizes and shapes.
We were staying at the Pineridge RV Campground next door and saw the diner. So we stopped in on a Thursday around lunch to get a cup of coffee and check out the breakfast menu. When we entered the diner, it was like stepping back in time. The look is 50s retro and so is the background music. The stainless steel is all polished and the glass on the ceiling is sparkling clean. The booths have been recovered and the entire diner is bright, and airy, and says hello, come in and enjoy a meal. Every one we talked to was very friendly. Off to the side, adjacent to the rest rooms is the ice cream shop. I believe they offer 24 flavors "in season" and only 16 flavors the rest of the year. There is a separate entrance to the ice cream shop so you don't have to trapse through the diner to get your milkshake.
This diner dates back to the 1940s and was originally located in Yorkville, NY. It was moved to its present location in the mid 90s. They have an original menu from the 1950s which is worth a look just because of the prices.
Breakfast is only served Saturdays and Sundays and we ate there both days. Our waitress was Jamie and she made the experience even better. They had omelet specials and pancake specials. I got the ham and cheese omelet special with home fries and rye toast. The omelet was gargantuan and I couldn't finish it. The home fries are what I'm accustomed to back home, thinly sliced potatoes cooked on the griddle until the edges are just crispy. The rye toast was sliced thin and perfectly toasted. My wife had the corned beef hash. They make their own corned beef. She said it was fantastic. I want to go back and try one of their Reubens for lunch. The next day I tried the strawberry pancakes but was smart enough to only order a short stack. That I was able to finish, with a side of sausage links. My wife had the corned beef hash for the second time!
The only thing missing from this diner is the juke box. In this day and age that's not possible but in its heyday, there was most likely a box at every booth, and boxes along the counter so you could play your favorite music while enjoying breakfast, lunch or dinner. They make up for it with the 50s and 60s era music playing in the background. There is just something nostalgic about dropping a quarter in the box on the wall and playing some of your favorite tunes.
This place is way cool and the food that we had was terrific. Give it a try, you will not be...
Read moreWe went here at around 2:30 on a Thursday it was pretty busy, but it is every time we drive by! it was our first time eating here we learned that just because a restaurant is cool looking doesn't mean it has good food! nor does it mean that it's ok to waaay overcharge your customers!! almost $4.00 for a coney is ridiculous especially when you're using canned coney sauce and stale buns! we each had a coney and split an order of onion rings, my husband had a malt and I had a child size shake, that was it! 2 coneys, 1 order of onion rings, 1 malt, 1 shake, our bill came to over $30 and that was without the tip!!! Yes they were busy but they are Always busy and should schedule help accordingly.
the coneys were basically the same thing I make at home, there was literally no difference except that I heat the buns a little to soften them, the onion rings were good but not worth what they charge, it's 1 onion chopped and battered! for the price they charge for the coneys the onion rings should have been included, at least fries should have been! the Shake and Malt were very disappointing! they gave me a fat straw for the child size banana split shake, I got 2 big chunks of banana through and 1 big chunk of something else, then nothing! I took the top off and looked in and all that was left was whipped cream and sprinkles, my husband's Malt was dripping all over before they even got it to him, he said it was more like chocolate milk than a malt. That night into the next morning we both had upset stomachs it was a very long night, I'm not saying we got sick from their food but it was the only time that day we both ate the same thing and we were both ill with the same symptoms, we were better by the next afternoon but we won't be going back there it just wasn't worth what we spent!.... Also looking at the photos people have left I have to say either we went on a very bad day or there is a lot of false advertisement going on, our shake and malt looked Nothing like the ones on their site, mine was in a Styrofoam, Kids, to go cup! My husband's malt was in a Small, Green, Plastic, Cup shaped kind of like the ones pictured but much smaller, not glass, not transparent, nothing rolled on the rim, it was dripping all over when they brought it to him, over all it was a pretty disappointing experience, and we won't...
Read moreStopped here after my son's school field trip for a fun treat. It had great reviews and pictures of shakes that looked so good. I went in the front and asked if shakes are around the side because they have signs everywhere saying parlor in the back. The same girl who told me yes is waiting there in the parlor. I ask for a strawberry and chocolate shake for my 2 or 4 year olds. She had pointed to some paper cups and I specifically asked for the glass ones so my kids could enjoy the whole experience of eating at a diner and have the whip cream and sprinkles on the shakes. We went and sat down and my husband hears the girl making the shakes that something is missing and the manager say "just make them". So we get our shakes and they are in giant styrofoam cups. The girl literally puts them down and said "I didn't know if you were going to be eating them here" . So I'm obviously frustrated the manager comes back and ask if we want to order food. I share with her that I was upset we didn't get the cups we had ask for because we came for the experience. She abruptly grabs my four year Olds chocolate Styrofoam shake and says ok I'll make you a new one holding out her hand for the other one in my 2 year old hands. I say no that's no what I'm saying and just told her I really wanted the cups. She says ok and walks away. The girl who made our shake comes back literally a minute later to ask how we are paying cash or card and she can take our card whenever we are ready. I'm just so shocked that they don't care about the service at all. No one asked if we wanted whip cream and sprinkles even in the to go cups or ever tried to make it better. It was the worst and most awkward experience ever. I would never tell anyone to try this place. Definitely not worth it and seems like the reviews are all from the restaurant staff themselves.. Very...
