June 22, 2016, dinner time: The receipt says "Riverside Bar & Grill"
For being in the middle of essentially nowhere, this was a perfect place to stop and eat for dinner. After leaving town, heading east, there really aren't any more options for well over an hour.
We were pleasantly surprised and happy with our meal. Not crowded, was very quiet so service was allowed to be attentive. It doesn't look like it was remodeled in many years, but the old interior didn't distract from the good food.
I fed a family of 6 for $37 (we all drank water) Kids meals were $4.95 each, Open Face Hot Turkey sandwich was $6.99 and the Philly Steak Sandwich was $7.99.
Talking to the locals in the restaurant, I was advised to NOT drive on US 26 eastbound as it was getting dark and the locals know how hazardous it is.. I decided to drive it anyways and in hindsight, I should have listened! Luckily nothing happened but there were plenty of close calls with wildlife all the way to the interstate. I've driven in all 50 states and it is like nothing I've ever seen before. You do not want to experience it.
If you are heading east on US 26 after you eat and it is to be dark before you reach Ogalala, DO NOT, I repeat: DO NOT DRIVE EAST ON US 26 AT NIGHT. It is literally a continual deer hazard- total dark drive with deer in the road. You wont have much time to react and the deer stand in the middle of the road. Consider yourself warned.
But definitely eat here! I recommend it and it is affordable. But no US...
ย ย ย Read moreThis is a gem of a motel. We choose this motel since they are dog friendly. We had a two queen size room. It was quite roomy. It was not expensive. The charge was $64 for two people and they only charge $5.00 for our dog. We stayed here for two nights.||The best thing is that they have a cafรฉ. You receive a coupon for a free breakfast. I had eaten here previous trips. You can choose almost anything from the menu. There are a few things that you can not get. I had the French Toast. They have a secret way fixing it. It was outstanding.||Now, this is not an Holiday Inn or Hampton Inn. The room was clean. They do not have an ice machine. They have small bags of ice for the motels. It is one stop for everything. You can get gas, snacks, cafรฉ and motel. It is on the south side of the Union Pacific railroad. The rooms were pretty quiet. I am a retired railroader, so the slight noise didn't bother us. Like I said that it is a gem in the country side...
ย ย ย Read moreThe room was really roomy, you could tell it has new carpet. Fridge, microwave, flat screen TV, Dish Network. (We didn't use the TV but it's there.) -- The showers have really low shower heads so I (at 5'6") had to squat to wash my hair. The office is only open until 10pm so that makes late arrivals challenging. The staff was friendly however, and a bag of ice is included in your room, as well as a continental breakfast. It looked a little sad so we ended up ordering an omelette to go - it took over 20 minutes to get the order which was pretty frustrating. It was also not totally correct (butter on toast which was ordered dry and a missing side.) Overall a nice spot, especially for traveling in the middle of nowhere but you need to be sure you get there early. They also threw in two extra bags of ice for our cooler when...
