We were looking for a day trip and I saw this place. We drove 3 & 1/2 hours to this place. I was so excited. I took my camera so I could get some good pictures and took probably 50+ with it and my cell phone camera to post on my FB & IG. We went to leave, and my son wanted to purchase a few items. While in line he saw a display of cheap bottle openers and asked if we should get one. We had gotten some bottles of pop and put them in the cooler to drink later for a picnic. He didn't believe me that I had a bottle opener, so I told him yes, since they were only 25 cents go ahead and get one just in case. When he went to pay the teenage boy rang them up as $2.99. I said, "Excuse me, these are only 25 cents" and he said, "no, they are antiques so they are more expensive." First off, they are NOT antiques. They are cheap plain metal openers and there were probably 30 or more. So I showed him the little bin they were in and that is said 25cents. There was another bin above them (it was a 3 tier metal thing that had multiple slots to hold items) the other bin had them for 50 cents. But I didn't see that until he twirled it around to me, so I pointed that one out too. He said, "NO that must be wrong" and proceeded to tear the prices off as I was trying to take pictures of them. So I told him I didn't want them. It was NOT the price that upset me. Let me be clear on that. It was the principle of the entire thing. They were CLEARLY marked in a bin for 25 and then 50 cents. It is the businesses job to have the correct pricing. Not mine to guess the prices. Has this place never heard that the price is what you have posted. Not what you decide at the register? If it was an accident, that's on the business, not the customers! So.... for that I give it...
Read moreWalking into the Old Village Mercantile is like stepping into a time machine. The creaky wooden floors and the faint scent of old books and candy instantly transport you to a simpler era. The building itself is a treasure, with its original tin ceiling and antique fixtures showcasing a dedication to preserving its historic charm. The shelves brim with a delightful array of nostalgic candies, handmade soaps, and unique gifts. The homemade fudge stole my heart—rich, creamy, and downright addictive. I also snagged a jar of their peach preserves, a burst of summer sweetness in every bite. The staff even shared a peach cobbler recipe I can’t wait to try at home. Speaking of the staff, they’re the soul of this place. Warm, welcoming, and full of stories, they make you feel like a local, even if you’re just passing through. Spending an afternoon here is pure joy—browsing the eclectic goods and chatting with friendly faces, time slips away unnoticed. Sure, it’s a bit off the beaten path in Caledonia, but that’s part of its allure. If you’re nearby, make the detour. A Great stop if heading to Elephant Rocks, Johnson Shut Ins, or the Arcadia Valley. You won’t be...
Read moreMy family and I passed through the area in the afternoon on a Saturday. I was actually on my phone looking for a near by ice cream place when my husband (who was the one driving!) sees Old Village Mercantile's home made ice cream sign. So we stopped! This place is adorable! It was cute on the outside, with some people on the patio playing music, but the inside really wows you. Everyone was so friendly and there was a great selection of all kinds of sweets. My husband, myself, and the kids all got a different flavor ice cream and they were all phenomenal! Seriously. The best ice cream I've ever had. I'm now dreaming of their pumpkin cheesecake waffle cone. Kids had cookie monster and strawberry, and my husband had chocolate chip Oreo swirl. SO DELICIOUS! I can't say enough good things about this place, we'll...
