Long but worth reading! As a hospitality professional who is tasked to meet guest expectations, and go on an beyond in creating memorable experiences, along the way, I have come to understand that in order to accomplish such task, it’s essential to create expectations and standards for my own hospitality experiences. Implementing this habit has allowed me to deliver exceptional quality service while discovering and understanding the do’s and don’ts of fine dinning. With that said, I will begin my review. My husband and I went to Mankas for dinner last Saturday. unfortunately, we had a very disappointing and unpleasant experience. Before I get into details I have to mention that my husband and I together have close to 40 years of experience in the hospitality industry. My husbands strengths and knowledge are in F&B/FINE dinning, my strengths are service and guest retention. Our initial (first touch)experience at Mankas was great, the greeting and seating was warm and welcoming, however, things turned sour and uncomfortable when we asked our server for wine glasses. We brought our own wine (2013 Silver Oak) for which we had to ask for glasses, they’re weren’t offered nor brought to us automatically. When our waiter returned with the wine glasses my husband immediately notice they were for white wine. Before he began to pour the wine my husband stopped to ask for Bordeaux glasses, or any red wine glass. We were not prepared to hear our waiters response, he said no! Both my husband and I were confused because we thought we were currently dinning at a “fine dining” restaurant, so, you have certain needs, wants, and expectations. Nonetheless, in disbelief we attempted to get over the situation and enjoy our dinner. Moments after, another waiter walking by our table spotted our wine and glasses. With a concerned tone of voice she asked if we preferred red wine glasses. Without hesitating and throwing the other waiter under bus, we accepted . While we were happy that someone with knowledge acknowledged that we had nice wine that needed appropriate glasses, we couldn’t avoid feeling upset that our waiter had denied us the right wine glasses. By the end of the night we came to the assumption that our waiter had stereotyped us. I find it hard to believe a fine dinning facility would provide such bold inconsistent service, or hire a waiter that has no clue which glasses are to be used with x wine. That’s basic fine dinning skills. Because we know the industry so well we understood the following. Latinos have a horrific reputation on tipping, they either don’t, or and when they do, is less than 10%, yes, terrible! As professionals we tend to steer away from making assumptions of this nature, but, after we replayed our dinning experience we remembered that our waiter not only denied us the right glasses. throughout our dinner his service was mediocre, bare minimum. He hardly checked on us, he waited until the end of our dinner to offer my husband more water. Like I said, basic dining skills, I was drinking sparkling water and was done with it before I even got to my entree, he never offered me more. With that said, It’s very hard not make assumptions if your waiter makes no effort to provide basic f&b service. Nonetheless, our bill was close to $100, we tipped 30%!! We could have done less, but we chose to send a message instead, that is to change perception and put a stop to stereotyping! We are not asking for a refund, free visit etc. We also don’t want to come across as the picky hospitality pros, we believe is far more important to share feedback because that will allow an establishment to make the correction moving forward. We in concept of there or always room for improvement. And if we’re victims of stereotyping or not. It’s very important to understand that in hospitality, no matter who comes to your door, you will always deliver...
Read moreIf I could put zero stars or negative stars on this place, I would. First off, I don’t post reviews, but our experience was so bad. WE LEFT THIS RESTAURANT BEFORE OUR APPETIZER WAS EVEN SERVED DUE TO POOR AND DISCRIMINATORY SERVICE. AND THEY DID NOTHING TO MAKE UP FOR ANY OF IT.
My family and I (party of 3) went to try this place on 7/7/18 for a late lunch around 2:30pm. There were several open tables inside so it wasn’t really busy as there was only two other ladies at another table and us when we came in. It was only a few minutes before our server came to ask if we were ready to which we said we weren’t and he immediately started to walk off until we called him back to at least get some appetizers and drinks. We ordered a glass of wine for me and bottled water for my wife and sister and some bread. He comes back to us with my wine, but places glasses of ice in front of my wife and sister along with the bottled water and didn’t even pour the water. We gave him our orders at that point. My wife ordered an entree with a side of sweet potato fries and he asks if she wanted ketchup with it. Totally normal right? Wait for it... and oh, we ordered the famed bone marrow appetizer at this point as well which he said would take 15-20 minutes to make and serve.
We waited for the bread which came after 15 minutes of waiting in which during that time another couple (Caucasian) had been seated near us and they received their bread at the same time as ours. As he took their order, they both ordered sides of sweet potato fries, but this same server offered them a choice of aioli, sweet mustard and ketchup for dipping sauces. My sister was first to notice as the woman was first offered the choices and we all heard it again offered when the man was asked which sides he’d like. My sister was quite peeved, but we were so hungry at this point that we decided to let it go and enjoy what was coming.
As we waited, a large group (Caucasian as well) was seated close to our table but a female server tended to them...served them their drinks and bread immediately I may add. They were quite overjoyed at the bone marrow and we hear them order two orders of it along with the rest of their orders. Now here’s the clincher...
It had been 25-30 minutes already as we waited just for the appetizer at which point the large group was served 2 (2!) bone marrow appetizers BEFORE US!!! It was at this point my sister got up and walked to our server standing yonder and asked him for the bill for the wine and water we ordered. He was a little confused as to why and my sister explained that it’s ridiculous that another table is getting something we’ve been waiting for. At this point this guy says one “sorry” goes to the kitchen to ask the chefs to stop the order of bone marrow and we can see that they had just put on the counter another bone marrow. This sever comes back out with no remorse and starts to put the bill together...NOT ONCE OFFERING TO TAKE CARE OF THAT BILL DUE TO THE POOR SERVICE! That’s when we all left. I hope he gets tagged for that bone marrow and it comes out of his check. I will be calling back this restaurant on Monday when a manager is available as no manager even came to stop us...
Read moreMy friend and I decided to give Manka's Steakhouse a try last night and were pleasantly pleased by both the service and the food. Perhaps my expectations were modest going in, since I'd heard mixed reviews from others and perhaps I was ambivalent about going to a restaurant that calls itself a "steakhouse." But instead I was quite taken by the rustic elegance of the dining room, the white tablecloth tables, and the overall atmosphere. Plus, the menu provided a variety of choices besides beef. I can't give a full review of the menu or the quality of the food, since we only had a couple of dishes, but what we had was well prepared and attractively presented. It all made for a very nice evening out. Prices and portion sizes are about what you'd expect from a good mid-level eatery with entrées topping out in the mid-$30 range. I will definitely go back--especially when the weather warms up (I'd like to try sitting in their outside patio, complete with fireplace). While Manka's may never earn a Michelin rating--nor do I believe they're trying to--it appears to be significantly better than a typical low-end steakhouse. Less sophisticated diners may complain about the portion sizes or prices or a steak not prepared with their favorite steak sauce, but I gather these are people who were hoping for the comfort and predictability of a steakhouse franchise--which Manka's is thankfully not. If you're going to complain about a $35 steak or a half-hour wait on a Friday night, then perhaps you're outside your comfort zone and should stick to your favorite Outback Steakhouse. Overall, Manka's is a good local night out in the west Fairfield/East...
