Matsuyama Restaurant — Restaurant in California

This is part of a small chain and the only Japanese restaurant in town. It is in a Safeway/CVS plaza along with several other casual restaurants. Seating is very limited, maybe 24 max and staffing is such that a full house is a challenge. I have rarely dined on premise so that is just an observation. Take out is equal to or more than dine in and best to order ahead as 25 to 40 minute waits are common. Food is consistent and the Bento Box at $17.95 is quite good value. Sushi rolls average $16.95 and are acceptable without being overly imaginative. A pet peeve is putting them in a container that is too small. I’m astonished at the good reviews!! I’ve lived in at least 15 states in my 36 years on the planet. So far California has had the worst sushi. This Worst Place BY FAR!! Price gouging (I worked at a sushi restaurant in Salt Lake City. Land locked city in Utah. We got fresh fish every other day. Not frozen. Prices NEVER change by season. Lies. Authentic Japanese cuisine. If you miss Japan Town choices in San Francisco, you will be pleased to have found Matsuyama. Their BentoBaku offerings are really good, And, I recommend the Tonkatsu Pork. The prices are surprisingly low. If you miss eating good Japanese food , you may not be overy enthusiastic but you won't be sadly disappointed either.
