I'm a motorcyclist and bicyclist, so I've been up Mulholland to and past the Rock Store more times than I can remember over the past few decades. Generally very quiet weekdays and a madhouse on weekend mornings with (dozens of) motorcycles lined up and filling the small parking area and the shoulder of the road in both directions. The tuner "Tokyo drift" car kids and trustafarian/ middle age crisis Porche/ Lambo crowd run up and down Mulholland on weekend mornings as well but you don't see them stopping at the RS, likely due to the lack of parking. There are non-working gas pumps outside (psych!) and a gift shop and busy coffee shop/ cafe inside, with inside and outdoor patio dining. The cafe is the kind of place that's so busy on the weekends that the waitresses are spoiled and don't really work that hard for their tips- like a tourist trap restaurant. Take your order, bring your food, refill your coffee, bring your check. Nothing more. They'll have a line outside regardless, and no one goes there for the service. I tried to fill my bicycle water bottles this past weekend, the waitress inside (with easy access to water and ice) shrugged and sent me to the bartender up at the patio, who said he "has no water at his bar" [huh??] and told me I could fill my bottles in the [fairly dirty] men's room from the handwash sink. Not much of a culture of customer service here, but it's a roadside dive, so what do you want. 4 stars I guess because of the location and vibe, not because of the...
Read moreDining establishment is the Stoneside Diner and the Rock Store is the merchandise shop next-door for clarification. We stopped at this biker hotspot (I am not a biker and pulled up in my EV) deep in Agoura Hills for our first time this morning and had a very nice breakfast. It’s definitely the sort of place that is filled with locals, far traveling bikers, and people searching for a Cheers type of experience where customers are called by their first name. All of the food is served on paper plates and it really feels like a camp experience in a sort of way. It’s quite large on the inside and there are many different tables available. The kitchen is small and they only have one chef cooking, but he did a great job. Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered came out very fast.
For my meal, I ordered the special of the day which was the Eggs Benedict and thought it was pretty good. Everything tasted kind of packaged versus made from scratch, but the eggs were perfectly runny and overall it had some nice flavors so I can’t complain. We also got the Biker Breakfast and the eggs and bacon were very good. However, the pancakes were a bit dry and kind of cakey instead of fluffy. But still we had a nice meal and the drive out there alone is worth the visit. I would recommend to anyone in the area or to anyone searching for a place that requires a beautiful drive...
Read moreI was visiting family on the West Coast in Huntington Beach and my girlfriend arranged to meet a friend in the area and arranged tour with an LA native. We got a tour of the city and surroundings that you could never get on a bus/van. It was a 6 hour education into an city/metropolis that even most locals won't know. We traveled up to Malibu and had stopped at Neptune's Net but it was packed so our guide told us about this place only open from Friday through Sunday but at the end of what is called "The Snake" - AKA West Mulholland Hwy. The food was not fancy but SOLID! I got a bacon cheeseburger and fries. It's a local hangout - started life as a stop on the Pony Express, then became a stagecoach stop, then a place for gas and now a place for motorcyclist to have fun after riding "The Snake" several times. You may even meet someone like Jay Leno. The food is SOLID - not the Cali pretense of having to have sun-dried this, or imported that. Order, eat and be satisfied. It's the simple pleasures that your mind latches on to for the fondest memories. This is Mom, Baseball and American Pie stuff here. Why is it called The Rock Shop? The place is covered with...
