I was biking the trail and stopped at Nick's last Monday. I had three scrambled eggs, breakfast ham and coffee. The service was fast and friendly but the egs were dried out and had a slightly odd flavor. The ham was good and they bring you your own carafe of coffee with cream in an actual creamer instead of those little plastic things so A+ on that! My bill was $11 and change. Fair enough! With a good tip I was at $18. Nick's Diner is at the halfway point from Red Wing on the bike trail. It's great to have a good place to stop for a break. I stopped this Monday and without looking at the menu I ordered the exact same thing. Unfortunately the eggs were exactly the same but everything else was fine. What was different was my bill. This week the same light breakfast was $16 and change! Almost 50% more. I went in to pay and politely mentioned that the bill was a lot higher than last week. I could tell the wait staff was tired of hearing customers complaining about the new prices because I definitely got a hostile reaction. One even snapped back " have you been to the grocery store lately!!" I handed her $25 in cash for the bill and tip. When you raise the price that much overnight you have to expect customers to ask about it. I understand what Bidenomics have done to the economy and everything has gone up and businesses are struggling. But a small town cafe charging $16+ for three eggs, ham and coffee seems a little excessive to me. If that's what they have to charge to survive, that's just the way it is. But, It's more than I care to spend on a quick, light breakfast so next Monday I'll have some gas station coffee in the park for a couple of bucks. I would like to point out that they charged me some non cash fee even though I did pay cash🤔 Maybe I got the tourist treatment?? I have a tip for the owner. If you are going to charge $2.50 per egg (and they do) at least cook them correctly. The eggs I had at your restaurant were whisked together and dumped out, super thin on a hot flat top and cooked very fast. Both times I had them they were dry and had a lousy flavor from whatever oil you use or maybe the flat top isn't being cleaned properly? Ideally, they should be cooked slowly (no higher than medium heat) in a nonstick skillet with butter, salt and pepper. You will get delicious, fluffy eggs instead of what you are serving. I have a picture of eggs I made this morning and your eggs from...
Read moreI’ve been joying the opportunity to have a meal here for 10 years and it’s about time I say thank you this way. It’s family owned and operated by Chris & Barbara Weigman, who boost the entire Cannon Falls community with their fine food, big hearts, and a welcoming smile for every guest.
They make every bit of space pleasant and welcoming. Their breakfasts are the most amazing and portions are generous. Breakfast is such a local favorite that it’s served until 2:00. A group of very nice gentleman told me their story of coming every month to dine and stay in touch. I’ve had their Fried Green Tomatoes Benedict with their Farmhouse Mimosa and highly recommend it. For a small town the chef’s skill will surpass your expectations – dishes are hand crafted with flare and flavor.
Both the Crispy Buffalo Chick Salad and the Sriracha Meatloaf is ideal for lunch. I’ve hosted a few business lunches here and my guests have love it. The Diner offers homemade soups – I especially recommend Nick’s Chile; you can get cheese, onions, and sour cream to top it off. I like all of them!
If possible, meet the owners, Chris and Barbara Weigman. His passion to support the local businesses and residents is remarkable. When I asked for a scone, he said since he took over this location, he honors the baker in town where scones are made. I admire that posture. Great attitude and customer service by all we have served us over the years. Look around too, the décor is fun and inviting a bit whit, style and local history.
We come from Farmington and are grateful that this small-town independent diner offers such a cozy spot. We love the outdoor eating area during warmer weather. It’s cute, well-tended, and offers shaded outdoor seating. Prices were very reasonable, and parking is generally easy to find along the street. Dine in, take out, and curbside pickup are all available.
Highly...
Read moreWent there for a late morning breakfast today - horrible wait experience. When my wife and I got there at 11:30 there were only two other couples in the place. We placed our orders and then the restaurant began to fill up. We didn't get our food until 12:15. I asked two guys sitting next to us and were there before we arrived how long they had been there. They said they arrived about 5 minutes before my wife and I. They hadn't received their food either. And about that time the waitress came out and explained to these guys that they were out of the menu items that they had ordered because they had a high volume of takeout orders that were phoned in. So these poor guys waited 50 minutes and only then does the waitress come out and give them a lame excuse. Then people at three other tables were served their food before ours and these people came in after my wife and I did. So how did the food taste? Nothing tastes very good when you have to wait 45 minutes to get it. I haven't stiffed a waitress and over 20 years but I did today and I really didn't want to because it may not have been her fault but I'm not rewarding anybody for that experience. I am...
