This is a pretty cool place and we we’re super satisfied with everything up until we found hair in our food. When my husband took it to let them know, he said he would take care of it. All he did was add two things that he forgot to put on our $26 charcuterie board and gave us the same board back, so basically I’m eating somebody’s hair infested food. That is what I don’t appreciate. The reason I know is because while I was eating this so-called brand new charcuterie board I found a pickled okra that I had already taken a bite out of that was covered up with a new okra. That’s lazy work. I understand that it may not be too busy here and that it’s a waste, but that is part of owning a business. When you make a mistake, you fix it! you don’t just half ass and just give them the mistake back. that’s bad business. I can guarantee that I’m not very happy with this. Unfortunately, it’s the only place around here so we’ll have to come back when we come to visit. I hope they see this review and use it as a learning experience to not give contaminated food back to the customer! Because apparently when you give food back, that’s been contaminated by somebody’s hair or body fluids doesn’t matter to them and they will just give it right back to you. it’s...
Read moreWhen we walked in the Sad Monkey looking for firewood for our camping trip at Palo Duro next door, I immediately told my partner how much I loved it. We did some shopping and as we were enjoying a drink inside with our dog (yes, friendly ON-LEASH dogs are allowed inside), one of the owners came up to us and we started chatting. It was refreshing to speak to someone who is local to this area, trying to make a living running a family business and doing it thoughtfully. The Sad Monkey is THE spot for happy hour, lunch, breakfast sandwiches, high-quality provisions, firewood, merch, pastries, your dog and your kids, ice cream and maybe even your next birthday party or wedding. We love meeting brothers Johnathan (sorry if I misspelled this) and Michael and came back the next day for some remote work (ask for the WiFi password), lunch and a cool place to plan our next adventure. We highly recommend stopping here if you’re coming to, through or by the area and look forward to our next visit. Cozy, clean and dripping with history and humor, the Sad Monkey Mercantile is simply...
Read moreWhy didn’t this place exist when I moved here 34 years ago? SMM is the perfect ending for every hike. In addition to the souvenirs and selected camping gear, they have a rotating selection of craft beers on tap, wine for those who prefer grapes, coffees, teas, and chais for those not so inclined, and charcuterie boards. They also offer a variety of sandwiches, and a taco trailer on weekends. Better yet, a ton of craft beers in cans to take home.
What’s not to like?
There’s always a fun crowd of tourists in here, and no shortage of conversation. It’s like your friendly neighborhood bar, but with a changing cast of characters every time.
Their event venue in back is also top shelf. My university division had a strategy planning session here earlier in the semester. It’s great for any event that just wants to get a little closer to nature.
And in the land of justifying one’s indiscretions, just remember: Every mile hiked results in more beer credits....
