June 2019- This was our first time to Old Captiva House for breakfast and we ordered the Chorizo Omelot, Lobster Benedict and Grand Marnier French Toast. The omelot and Benedict was served with potatoes that were very flavorful. Both entrees were very tasty and flavorful. The Grand Marnier French Toast was thick, with a subtle sweetness. Very well prepared. The restaurant is well lit and comfortable, not too crowded and windows all around. The staff is very nice, friendly and welcoming. We will definitely come back to this restaurant and recommend even if you aren’t staying at TweenWaters Resort.
June 20, 2020- today we dined at Old Captiva House for breakfast and then again for dinner. For breakfast we ordered Traditional Eggs Benedict served with breakfast potatoes $11.95, Grand Marnier French Toast $10.25, and Two Eggs, Bacon, Breakfast Potatoes and toast $9.95. Everything was wonderful. The bacon was quality and prepared just right. The breakfast potatoes were crisp and seasoned nicely although a bit salty. The Grand Marnier French Toast was crisp and very flavorful. The Eggs Benedict was also very tasty and we substituted the Canadian bacon for sliced tomatoes. Our server was Rosenadine and she was friendly and attentive. We went back for dinner to celebrate our 1st Anniversary. Anthony was our server and he was professional and attentive. We ordered appetizers Crab Bisque which was served deconstructed and constructed right in front of us. The presentation was lovely and the flavor was very nice. The other appetizer was a Lobster cake served with an avocado slaw. The cake was lightly crisped and probably the best I’ve had and the avocado slaw was very good and unique to me. For the main course we ordered the pan seared 9 Oz filet with roasted garlic Parmesan potatoes and vegetables $42. This was cooked perfectly, lean and very tasty. The second entree was Jumbo Prawns served with asparagus and a creamy Maine Lobster risotto with a key lime butter sauce $36. There were three large grilled prawns and this was a very tasty dish. We definitely recommend Old Captiva House for Breakfast and dinner and we will be back on...
Read moreWe had reservations and were so excited to visit this special place on our first trip back to Captiva after Ian. We have thoroughly enjoyed our trip and have loved supporting local restaurants, markets, stores and vendors on the island, being sure to give grace and understanding to obvious bumps that may still be in the road.
Having said that our experience at Old Captiva House was awful. It was especially sad as we looked forward to this special family dinner and everything about it was disappointing. One star feels like too much to rate our experience this evening.
We had reservations for 7pm. We waited 45 minutes to have a wait person come to take our drink order at our table. At that point we asked someone working for bread please.
As we finally were able to order dinner more than an hour after sitting down, we ordered a second drink that never came, ordered it again with another staff member and still only one of these two orders came… after our dinner was finished. No water or bread refills the entire evening.
Food was mediocre at best and service was awful. Our bill was over $400 and it makes you so upset to spent this kind of money and not have water even at the table.
They were having a busy night and clearly overwhelmed however we were ready to have a wonderful evening, overlook bumps and provide grace to things that we couldn’t control. However, never was there any consolation, apology or attempt to make things right. An evening we looked forward to was from start to finish, an incredible disappointment as well as a waste of money. We even waited in the lobby after dinner in an attempt to speak to a manager, owner or anyone to let them know how we felt about our experience but after waiting another ten minutes without anyone there we ended the already upsetting evening.
There are plenty of places on the island working hard, providing great food and excellent service and appreciative of the support of customers. Unfortunately in our experience, this wasn’t one of those and though we visit Captiva annually and have for 30+ years, this will be a difficult one to get back...
Read moreA beautifully decorated restaurant in a great location, but the food is of mixed quality and service was slow and inattentive. The bartender is clearly an expert, because the cocktails were fantastic. Bread service was excellent, with tasty fresh rolls and multiple dishes of seasoned olive oil around our large table. Appetizers were disappointing--the prosciutto-wrapped jumbo prawns sounded delicious, but the bone-dry and flavorless dish I was served was anything but. The escargot is a bizarrely unpleasant version of a classic dish that includes a noxiously thick red sauce instead of the garlic-drenched morsels we know and love. The entrees my party ordered were a mixed bag, but my grouper was perfectly prepared, and the lobster risotto it came with was also pleasant. Desserts were excellent, with the key lime pie being a stunner, and the "bread pudding" being delicious despite being simply zhuzhed-up banana bread. Our waiter was pleasant, but inattentive--he would take incomplete orders and we'd have to call him back so other members of our party could order. We hoped for a leisurely-paced meal, but wound up sitting for nearly three hours (with three kids in our party, mind you), and the restaurant had empty tables everywhere. We wound up waiting for 45 minutes to receive our check, and then we only received it because a member of our party went and found the waiter and asked for it. A decent option for drinks and dessert in post-Ian Captiva where restaurants are limited, but they'll have to up their game to get our dinner...
