Northern Maine Brewing Company — Restaurant in Caribou

As a chef I seldom order hamburgers as many places treat them as an afterthought and put very little care into them but something about this place made me decide to give one a try here. I ordered the special with a local smoked cheddar cheese and mustard sauce. The burger came out a perfect mid rare as ordered and assembled the right way, a rarity these days. By the right way I mean the lettuce and tomatoes on the bottom of the role, a brioche, which helps the bun stay dry and not fall apart as it is eaten. The cheese was just smoky enough and the mustard cut the richness rather well and the hand cut fries were nice and crispy. The only thing I would change is the cut of the pickles. Wonderful as they were I would have enjoyed them more of they were cut smaller or thinner so they would be easier to bite through as you take a bite of the burger and that may just be a personal preference. The wife ordered the maple brined fried chicken sandwich which she enjoyed, the kids had mac and cheese, which was a good deal. We started with the house salad which featured local greens and came with a fresh hot pretzel rod instead of croutons, kudos for that. The absolute WORST service I’ve ever experienced at a restaurant. I rarely leave restaurant reviews and if I do they’re exclusively positive, but this was an awful experience. i can’t say anything about the food or drinks because I never even got the chance to try them.

We were told when we arrived that there would be a 45 minute wait, which we were fine with. During the wait we could hear several conversations about the different items they were running out of. After the 45 minute wait the hostess seated us (party of 3) at a 6 person table and told us we were getting a big table so they could “get us seated earlier” We waited for 15 minutes and no one came to bring us water, take drink orders, or even let us know that a server is coming. After 15 minutes of waiting we started to try to get the attention of any server that walking into the room, only for them all to act like they didn’t see us. Finally a third server came to the table right next to ours and I tried to get her attention. She looked at me and then walked away. After being literally ignored for 20 minutes with no explanation AND a limited menu, we left. Went there 2 nights in a row .First night apps were good ,the tornado shrimp and the beer dip with pretzels . Both dinners were not good really .My wife had the chicken Alfredo had a hair in it which was not as big of deal as it was bland Tasteless. I had prime rib which was small for 42 bucks and it is smoked and comes with no au jus sauce because it’s smoked .Flavor was decent enough to eat , but barley weird .It came with onion rings they gave me 3 and they were greasy.Second night we got the mix Match combo dinner. Terrible the fish was stinky fishy taste,the chicken was just strong garlic taste weird again and the steak tip was gross, tasted odd . The Mac cheese side was tasteless and the sautéed mushrooms with onions were terrible greasy and again weird taste.We have few options up here ,so we drove over from P.I and gave um 2 shots .No Good.Food is overpriced and not good . Still tipped 25 plus percent because service was fine .If they were in area where there was much competition forget it .There food business would be next to nothing .Beer might be great ,but there food stinks.No love going into that food .
