Papi’s Mex Grill & Bar — Restaurant in Carrollton

Showed up at 6 p.m. in a Friday excited to try a new restaurant in Carrollton. Not a person in sight. Doors locked even though the posted hours said they were open. Follow up: Well, they finally opened, so we decided to give them a try. In all honesty, I was not happy that Carrollton is getting yet ANOTHER Mexican restaurant (8 + 2 food trucks is excessive for a town of less than 4000 people). But, they are close to home, and I didn't feel like cooking. The plus is that it's gorgeous inside and serves an awesome ranch-style dip as well as standard salsa. Unfortunately, the good news ends there. We were immediately seated with chips and dips. The place was pretty empty but after almost 15 minutes I had to go find our waiter. Ordered the carne asada. The portion was huge, and there were tons of accompaniments, but it was so tough that the steak knife that they gave me wouldn't even saw through it. Stay away from this one. Husband ordered chicken poblano that was just ok. Prices are less than the other places around, and I'll probably give them another chance, but I really expected more from this place considering that it's their 3rd restaurant.

This place was fantastic from start to finish! We were greeted and seated right away, and the chips with delicious salsa and jalapeño ranch dip arrived almost immediately. Our margaritas were great (we shared a pitcher), and the food was outstanding! He had the combination fajitas, and I had the birria tacos – both were amazing. We will definitely be back!!! The food was really good and not overly spicy. The Enchiladas Mazatlan were good but I will ask for no cheese sauce next time, or have it on the side, because the enchiladas were SWIMMING in it. We are here on a Friday and the live music was AWESOME!!! One draw back was that we felt it was a little pricey. 2 adult entrees (mixed fajitas and enchiladas mazatlan), queso, 2 soft drinks, NO ALCOHOLIC DRINKS, and cost was over $50.
