Hickory River Smokehouse — Restaurant in Champaign

We sat outside. The menu QR code didn't work, I tried twice. We got menus, they had no prices on them. We ordered. We never got our iced teas. Our food came super fast, but everything was pretty cold. No butter came with the potato. We asked for some. It was in tiny packets, which was ok, but the potato wasn't warm, so the butter didn't melt. The only thing that was even close to being warm was the side of Mac and cheese, and it wasn't hot, just sort of warm. Everything was also just sort of bland, though the cornbread was pretty tasty, if it had only been warmed a little and I would've gotten a little butter to go with it. Food is always amazing. Probably the most consistent and highest quality meat of any local BBQ place. That is especially true if you like your meat lean. Go with the pulled pork or chopped brisket for the most flavor, but sliced is also solid. The sausage is surprisingly good and locally sourced.

They don't have very exciting sauce options, but it is thick and flavorful. Sides are solid. Waffle fries are lightly breaded (get them) and all fries are cooked fresh to order. The beans are awesome, coleslaw is vinegar based, mac and cheese is decent, and cornbread is very moist. They also have really good cobbler if you want dessert.

"At the Fields" location. The last time I attempted to order here was 15 minutes before closing. Although, I could see four people cleaning the place, no one responded to the drive thru speaker or window (knock), so I went to JJ's for a sandwich. This time, I went inside for takeout around 4:30pm. The items were off-center in the bag and fell over. It appeared that the cashier corrected it before they handed it to me. When I got home, the grease from the meat had escaped the bag and saturated my car seat. All of the meat (2lbs) had fallen out of the styrofoam and into the bag.
