Had looked at the menu and had high expectations but maybe too high. Sat outside, and it was beautiful. Apple Cider Mimosa was good, but idk if there was any apple cider in it. Coffee was hot and great, and I loved the mug. The Trout Eggs Benedit was served skin on, but it was soggy because it was under everything . The Hollndaise sauce needed salt.... a little goes a long way. Had to wait for an extended time for salt and pepper as it is not on the table. Luckily I had a pack of Tony's in my purse. The fried had zero seasoning- like none! But they were served hot and crispy. The chicken was fried perfectly but was served hot but was begging for seasoning all the way down to the chicken . The white gravy was the same. Cooked perfectly, the sausage was good but all around the sauce needed salt and pepper. Consistency was perfect. The biscuit was like bread. Very different biscuit than I have ever had, worked well with the gravy, but needed salt. The wings were a disappointment. Although French Ed nicely and cooked perfectly had zero flavor, luckily I had a packet of Tony's in my purse that we shared with the table next to us. The sauce was sweet, pineapples sweet too, so I was wtg for a salty or spicy element to elevate the wings. We will be back to try something different. The menu is exciting, and new just needs salt amd pepper at a minimum.

Just finished dinner at Highlands Kitchen & Bar and wanted to provide an objective review. Service: Service was fair for us, but we noticed the two other tables around us were very unhappy. One table was given the wrong order and the other’s food item never showed up. Usually, when that happens, you comp a drink or dessert as an “oops, my bad” gesture, but neither was offered. Food: I got the 18 oz ribeye with chimmichuri and mashed potatoes. It was a solid steak. Not the best, but solid. My wife, who is celiac and needs gluten free, got the tuna tacos. They only gave her two tacos and a side of tasteless rice (FYI: for tacos, the standard dinner serving is three and two for lunch). The tacos had very little tuna and lots of cabbage. I understand food prices have increased, but I can say with confidence their items are overpriced, even with supply shortage considerations. My wife ended up buying a frozen burrito at the nearby Ingles. They also have a gluten free menu, but it turned out half the menu actually wasn’t gluten free. We appreciated that our server double checked and that they even had a gluten free menu to begin with, but what’s the point if you don’t adhere to it? Three of the six appetizers on gluten free menu had soy sauce in them when our sever checked. Drinks: A cocktail ranges from $14-16, which is what you’d expect to find in the fanciest downtown Asheville, Charlotte, or Raleigh restaurants, but Lake Lure? Again, a bit overpriced given the margins on liquor and quality of cocktails. Overall, I like that there is an alternative in Lake Lure for people that want a more formal dining experience instead of the very casual Lake House Bar & Grill, but it seems they’re treating folks like a captive audience and gouging a bit. If they can figure out their gluten free menu, up the portion sizes by 20%, and price cocktails in the $12 range we’d give it another shot.

I hate to not give this place five stars, but I can't bring myself up to four, either. I am not trashing this place, but leaving this review to let them know how close to perfect they really are and encourage them to continue to improve. The greeting at the door was polite and welcoming. Tables were beautifully decorated. The view out the window was lovely. The cocktails were creative, top shelf, and really refreshing. Our table probably ordered 6-8 different drinks and all were really well done. We had the calamari for an appetizer. It was a bit too heavily breaded, maybe in a conflake batter instead of the lighter panko needed for this dish. The lobster mac is a must-have. They are using real chuNk lobster, not that sawdust mayo blend less discerning restaurants might try to pass off. This stuff is GOOD. The table ordered two chicken dinners, chicken sandwich, and the salmon dinner. Both chicken dinners were again breaded in a cornflake-type batter (totally appropriate for chicken) and the chicken and salmon were PERFECTLY cooked. But the chicken breading had no seasoning. None. We had to ask for table salt. The ricotta mousse and rice were likewise flat, zero seasoning. Nothing. Just bland. Please 🙏 add some seasoning to your ricotta, and rice, and fry batter! Take me 🏡 home with the delicious lake cuisine you already know how to do, just add that final step and season it all lightly. I am not a salt guy, I hardly ever add salt to anything. So when i say you need to add seasoning, it isnt because i burned out my pallette elsehwere. Everything here was so well done, I want you to have five stars. If it was less expensive I would give you four. But for the price point, you should already be ahead of this by tasting things nightly. I will be back to try again. Every other element was too good for me to give up on this place.

Stopped in while in area. Arrived just at opening without reservation so was happy to get a few seats at the bar, was not looking for full dinner anyway. Small bar, bartender Nate was very friendly but seemed challenged while prepping bar at opening, filling house beverage orders and then orders from people sitting at bar. Our beverage order was squeezed in after 15 minutes or so, enjoyed our order and a brief conversation with Nate. Ordered a few appetizers, grilled octopus and mahi tacos @19 ea. thought we could get an idea of the quality of this place for future. Well, we did, octopus dish was served lukewarm, not to mention small portion for price. Decent flavor but a bit chewy. I was able to live with the octopus disappointment but when I got only two average sized tacos with a overkill of lettuce and tomato hiding a paltry amount of fish, this was crazy. $9.50 per taco, this was insulting and a rip-off. This place may have some good reviews and the ownership means well, but I rather enjoy an expensive dish that meets the price in flavor, quantity and presentation that I offer in my restaurant, than this place. If price is not a problem, nice place, staff seems nice, enjoy.

Summers @ The Lake... This may be a tradition to many but was a new change for me. A road trip stay-cation with family brought us to the area. On the daily drives around we passed The Highlands multiple times. The constant landmark prompted me to check out the menu. The whole family packed in for a late lunch. The staff was pleasant and welcoming as we were seated. A party of 6 quite a few orders were placed. A quick recap of some of the items I ordered. -Friend Calamari -Grilled Octopus -Snapper Special The appetizers of fried calamari and grilled octopus were great starters. My octopus was tough and chewy a sign that it was over cooked. Our server Timothy replaced it without hesitation. The second plate was perfect. However the best part of the meal was the special of the day the Red Snapper filet. It was the right choice. Cooked and seasoned to perfection, it was flaky and melted like butter in my mouth. I left extremely happy I convinced my family to give The Highlands a try. Just A Note: If the Red Snapper is the special for the day, order it without a second thought. If you would like a non-alcoholic beverage their sweet tea is a great choice.

Went to this gem on a Saturday, I had heard alot of great reviews on this restaurant and they were right, the atmosphere was great, the drinks on point but the food was a little disappointing. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, Mahi chowder, wedge salad, the butternut squash pasta, and the lobster roll. Lobster roll was delicious but there was a little bit of lobster and at $29 /sandwich it hurt....it came with the truffle fries but I didn't taste any truffle, still the clarified butter with the lobster was yummy. The green tomatoes were ok and Mahi chowder was mediocre. The star of the night of the night was the butternut squash tortellini and the wedge salad, and the white oak cocktail was amazing. I will go back for brunch but it was a bummer on the lack of flavor on some dishes, but every restaurant has"off " nights. We did order the homemade key lime pie that we as absolutely heavenly! Restaurant was mostly empty...off season...bar was full and another two top walked in after we did. Great location. Hope brunch is amazing, I love to support local restaurants!!!!
