A couple weeks ago, I tried the pizza and salad buffet at Heroes Family Bistro and Pub Churubusco. Their buffet is available Friday, Saturday and Sundays from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. $13.99 for adults and $9.99 kids 5 to 10. Heroes recognizes not only veterans past and present, but also public service workers such as firefighters, police officers and hospital staff. I'm pretty sure they offer a discount. Make sure to ask. Let's talk about the food. The hot side has grinder style sandwiches, garlic cheese bread, cinnamon bites, and around six pizzas. There was quite a bit of variety in how the pizzas were dressed. I definitely enjoyed the classics, but I really felt something when I tried the jalapeno chicken pizza. (Heat🔥) The salad side has a very nice offering of typical toppings, but also a couple that aren't as common like black olive. Definitely one of my favorite things to put on a salad. There are a couple lettuce options along with quite a few pasta salad, potato salad type choices. Something I don't see often that they offered on this side was a carrot raisin salad. It has kind of a poppy seed type dressing to make it all stick together. An interesting texture for sure. Heroes does have a three-way liquor license, so they can sell beer, wine, and spirits. The building is decorated nicely. There are memorials on the wall for a fallen K9 officer, a table set up front for pow and mia soldiers, and the big wall that has family and community members hung with pride. Tim and Lisa have done great work honoring service members while also providing some pretty damn good pizza. They do have a full menu besides the buffet nights. Will return soon.

It was pretty quiet when we arrived, but the attention given was great. We started off with drinks from the bar. Octoberfest was delicious, as was the cocktail (amaretto & diet). They like to get local brews and have one coming soon from Albion. Our appetizer was the loaded taco fries. Oh my goodness, they were delicious! Who would have thought taco ingredients would be so good on fries? Yummy. Next, we had 6" subs, an Italian and an American. Both had plenty of toppings and sauce. They were a little messy to eat but had great taste. The cook did a great job. So did Monroe, our server. According to the menu, they have a salad bar and pizza buffet on the weekends. The salad bar was available to us, but we didn't order it. We enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. It is decorated in a military theme. We figure it gets pretty busy on weekends with the pizza buffet. This was our first visit, but we're sure we'll be back.

$6 for 11 french fries. Not even enough for two for each person in our house. What the hell? They said they weigh their french fries and that’s why it’s such a small amount? I have never encountered a business be stingy with french fries??? And they said it’s normal for the mozzarella sticks to be burned and “that’s just the way they’re cooked?” Incredibly unhelpful as well when we asked about it, thinking it must have been a mistake because it was so ridiculous lmao.

I will start this review with the fact I usually don't review. I have worked years of food service. I am very forgiving because of that. We have lived in churubusco almost 3 years. We have ordered many, many times. We have ordered for birthday parties and just because I don't want to cook. Over the years I have experienced yelling over the phone to place my order because they can't hear me. I have repeated my order numerous times because whoever is taking my order is too busy playing to listen. I have been over charged. I have recieved messed up food. I have waited almost 2 hours before for delivery. (I live about 5 min away) Let me tell you why tonight will be the last time I ever order from any East of Chicago. I called and there was a mgr special. I ordered 2 and some bread sticks. First they told me I lived too far away. I said something is wrong because I am 5 min down the road. We got that figured out after about 5 more min. Then when she told me the total I thought I heard them say $34.71. I paid over the phone with my card. I got a txt about my card and it was charged over $41. I called back. The mgr got on the phone and we was figuring it out when he told me I wasn't getting the special because I asked for a little extra sauce. They charge for that. I asked why she didn't tell me if it changed the price? He treated me like I was stupid and actually asked me if I expected it all for free. I was immediately offended. I asked him if he was serious. At that point I really wanted to cancel the order but 5 people were starving and options were skimpy. He tried to tell me I took it the wrong way but I was done. Till we talked about how to fix the charge on my card. His paperwork showed they charged us $34. Our card showed $41 something. Not his fault but I guess its the cherry on top tonight. I can't even tell you if it is fixed. I'm done. Never again will I order from them. We will drive to Columbia City to...

This was the first time eating at Heroes and it will be the last. Our order took over a hour and 45 minutes to be delivered (it was stated it would be 55 minutes) but I understand things get busy. On top of that a large was about the size of a medium and our order was stone cold and I mean so cold you had to cut the parmesan bites with a knife, gross and only one bite could be choked down, not one piece, one small bite. But the pizza, oh, the pizza; I am a pizza lover of all kinds, even the not so good frozen stuff, but this was a subpar pizza on a greasy crust with almost no toppings (and forget about the extra green olives I paid for) hidden under what I swear was an entire jar of pizza sauce. I have had deep dish, I love deep dish, this was not deep dish. This was a belly ache and heartburn in a box. I don't like leaving reviews like this but this was beyond terrible, it was beyond edible and embarrassing as we had family over. $40 wasted and a night of PBJ's. Never again and not even if they were the only place serving food, on the planet would I order again. You have...
