What can I say...This place is an institution on the west side. I believe this is the only place I have visited that knows how to make a good chocolate soda. This is really an art, since you must add the correct amount of chocolate syrup, vanilla ice cream, then soda water, mix then fill with additional soda water, mix again then top with a jet of high pressure soda water to produce a froth. (I remember sitting on a round, rotating seat at the counter of a drug store with a soda fountain in Price Hill, when I was 4 or 5. I would always order a chocolate soda, which would come in a tall, real glass, glass, surrounded by a stainless steel glass holder with a handle. I would sit and spin on the revolving seat while the soda was being made. The soda usually had whipped cream and a red cherry on top.) While there are now waxed cardboard cups and no cherry or whipped cream, the actual chocolate soda at Putz's tastes very much the same. It is, at least, the best approximation that I have had from any of the local soft serve locations. This is just the thing to quench thirst and provide some heat reduction and quick energy for that last hill going up to Groesbeck at the end of a long bike ride on a hot...
Read moreI used to WALK to Putz’s when I was a kid. Sweltering summer days were spent wondering the woods or playing on I-74 before it opened to traffic, and then straight to Putz’s for the kind of creamy treat that would fill your soul. I moved out of state in 1981, but every time I visited Cincinnati in the summer, Putz’s was on my MUST VISIT list. And when I’d go back to California, it was so much fun when strangers would recognize my Putz’s t-shirt and nod and smile like “Hey- I know that place!”
They have a wide selection of soft serve ice cream concoctions; banana splits, sundaes, parfaits, cones, shakes and malts. They are consistently delicious and fairly priced. I love that it’s still the same friendly, family-run business I remember as a kid. Pull up, order a chocolate dipped cone or a strawberry sundae, look at the old pictures in the window, sit at a picnic table and make some memories for the kids in your family, or better still - tie a first date to this ice cream. I know after 40 years, you’ll still be enjoying the ice cream and the memories crafted at Putz’s...
Read moreLime soft serve was so good I cant stop thinking about it !! I even went back a few days later and they had replaced it with pineapple something ... I was so disappointed but it didn’t stop me from trying the pineapple flavor and it was good but not as good as the lime . I will note that I believe you can buy pints of whatever they sell and I wasn’t aware of that after all these years . Also , I do understand having a new flavor each week or month or whatever but even if they hv a new one up I think you should still be able to order whatever the past flavors were right?! Especially if they sell that flavor in pints and it’s right there on location. Just my opinion and we know what they say about opinions ... lol ! Oh one more thing to remember is they only take cash . I hardly ever carry cash anymore but the ATM fee at the G spot market is a dollar cheaper then the BP...
