So Iām finally getting around to writing this review.
Let me start by saying that I was really conflicted about this review as it is never my intent to hurt a small business or accuse a business unfairly. I always try to be honest and if I experience something i believe they need to know, I contact them and speak to management first to give them an opportunity to fix the issue. That also doesnāt mean Iām not going to share my honest opinion as a consumer.
I had been telling my son who just returned from Bavaria in Germany about this place. We divided to go give it a shot and to our disappointment the selection of fresh pastries in the cafe were limited.
I have fond memories of eating soft fresh and airy yet flaky croissants at a local bakery, unfortunately that was not the case here. The croissants we ordered were cold, hard and dense.
I wish that were the worse thing about our visit however, what I am about to share is the reason I did NOT bother taking pictures. As I sat across from my son facing the wall with the foundation drinks on my left, I saw movement on the floor under the bread rack. I paused and watched intently for a few seconds hoping it was t true, but then I saw a small mouse make itās way from under the bread rack and behind the fountain drinks.
At this point I was grossed out and could not eat what I had purchase. I quickly had my son remove my grand son from the play area and we left.
About a week later I called Stefanie to let her know what I experienced. She informed that they know there are mice because āitās an old building and in the winter they see more because they are trying to stay warm. She said they have a pest company coming out and they are working on the issue.ā She saldo said she hope I did t get grossed out. I told her I did and that I wanted to let her know before I wrote this review.
Unfortunately if I donāt feel that my health is a concern to a business then I canāt in good conscience continue to frequent or give...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreVisited the cafe for lunch and was pretty disappointed with the overall visit.
We have lived in Clarksville for years and never ate here before now, not really sure why...but hey.
We spent a few years in Germany but do not consider ourselves epicurean experts in German cuisine...but enjoy a good schnitzel or wurst when we find it.
Neither one of us could order schnitzel because they were all out. I find that to be a huge issue when a place specializing in German food runs out of a German staple by 12 noon. We were told that it sells out quickly, but that's pretty doggone quick unless there is a massive amount of Clarksvillians who enjoy schnitzel for breakfast. Keep in kind that the front page of the website says BEST GERMAN RESTAURANT on it, but they have more American dishes than German.
I ordered the Currywurst, which tasted pretty good...but it was overloaded with ketchup and curry powder, I have had Currywurst before and there was just too much on it. Would have been better with some homemade ketchup though.
Because they didn't have any schitzel, my wife ordered a Cajun Turkey sandwich. I took a bite out of it as well...it had a good taste, but the bread (I presume it came from the bakery) was the star of the sandwich. In the end of it all, it was an American sandwich in a place where we expected more German options.
We will not be back to Silke's Cafe. It's a shame that they do not really emphasize German food as the predominant menu items...heck German has at least five different types of schnitzel unique to the country...if Silke's would lose some of the Americanized sandwiches and focused more on German food, we'd probably be back. I know they're not open for business JUST for me, but I fail to see why they're such a popular eatery (aside from...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreTL;DR: 11/10. Pizza is great, even nontraditional items are done with expertise. Vegan/ Gluten Free options. Try one of the German meats on the pizza. The vegan mozzarella they use has 0% impact on the taste. Super polite and graceful about any out of stock items. A++ prices.
First, I'll note that the Cafe is along the back wall of the plaza, separate from the Bakery right by College St. If I could give more stars, I would. My girlfriend and I got a pizza and soup bread bowl. Starting with the pizza: My girlfriend had a German meat added - they were out but quickly offered to let us pick another. Our toppings: Spinach - super fresh. They clearly know how spinach is supposed to be in hot dishes. Pepperoni - plentiful but not overpowering. Pineapple - they used bigger chunks and didn't ruin it with the juice like a lot of places. German meat (I couldn't tell you which one) - small slices scattered fairly evenly. Overall - it had everything she and I were craving: savory, fresh, with a hint of sweet. I didn't even know what I was craving, but this pizza satisfied every single craving. 11/ 10. (We also had the vegan mozzarella, but that had 0% difference in flavor.) They were also out of bread bowls - they were super polite and graceful about it. We were given an apple strudel for the price difference - I never thought to add raisins and nuts (similar taste to walnuts but softer in flavor/ texture). The apple strudel was slightly sweet and had an airy texture - it was perfect to start the meal with. Unfortunately, I cannot express how the soup is because I didn't get any. My girlfriend ate it all while I was still...
