The Spanked Puppy Restaurant & Pub — Restaurant in Colchester

This burger was very well cooked and my hats off to the grill guy. It was a perfect temp and super juicy so no pressing. The burger was this: pickled red onion topping, cheddar, 1/2 pound of beef (they didn't specify where, cut, or anything like that so I assume it's tube meat that they portion) I'd consider this on the lower rung of an average burger. This was a steakhouse burger with nothing really steakhouse about it except maybe the pickled red onion? The idea of the burger wasn't really there. Usually a steakhouse burger comes w/ a BBQ sauce and a fried onion ring as we commonly see it. Sometimes it comes with a A1 type sauce or bears the name "Texas Burger" or "BBQ Burger." I think at the end of the day, these kinds of burgers are pretty similar but Spanked Puppy's version just seemed like a burger with pickled red onion. The pickled red onion sadly went unnoticed. I tried it alone and it didn't have that acidic vinegar hit that you expect and was too fake of a color. The chipotle mayo was there but not much flavor with it either. The meat was well cooked but poorly prepped. A little salt can go a long way with this burger. The bun was a store bought burger bun with a spongy consistency with a "there but not noticed" vibe. Too floury. Again, hats off to the cook for toasting it w/ butter on the flat top though. This burger excelled in its cooking and delivery but fell flat on its flavor and overall planning. I've never had better service. I had a late lunch a few weeks ago with my mother. The food was excellent, our initial waitress was helpful and attentive. After we finished and paid we sat there for a while. My mother and I both worked in restaurants for years, so we wouldn't stick around if we were take up a table, but it was between lunch and dinner so there weren't many new people coming in. The waitress who was taking over for the dinner shift (thats what I assume the case was anyway) checked in on us to see if we needed anything, but said that we were welcome to stay as long as we wanted and offered to get us some water. We declined. After a little while when she saw me nursing the ice in my glass she brought water anyway, which we greatly appreciated. I really wish I'd gotten the names of both women for this review, but I'll ask to be in the same section next time and hopefully I can...

I recently visited The Spanked Puppy, and unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfying. I ordered the clam strip basket, which, despite my high hopes, turned out to be quite underwhelming. The clam strips were overcooked and lacked flavor, leaving me wanting something more substantial.

Additionally, I opted for sweet potato fries, which came with an upcharge. To my dismay, instead of a generous serving, I received a meager portion of about 20 French fries. It felt like a lack of value for the price I was paying.

Overall, my experience at The Spanked Puppy was disappointing. The food failed to meet expectations, and the small portion sizes, especially for a side, left me feeling shortchanged. I hope they can improve, but I doubt I’ll be returning...
