Finally made it to Hullabaloo after hearing so much about it. Short take: Good comfort food a bit on the salty side just like grandma’s (if your grandma is from the South). Good atmosphere for a relaxed brunch but make yourself skinny when getting into the Order line. Plenty of food for the price. Definitely worth a try.
We tried the breakfast burrito, biscuits and gravy, Elvis fries and the breakfast platter. Everything here is pretty standard fare, what you would imagine, or may have experienced, as a good old fashion down on the farm breakfast. The sausage gravy covering the biscuits, fries and burrito might be a little too salty for some but it was just right IMO. The burrito was exceptionally hefty, definitely what you want to go for if you are super hungry. Atmosphere/decor has a heavy dose of stereotypically Texas rural vibe.
It’s counter service, just grab a menu when you come in and get in line to order. Which brings up the only real downside to our visit. The order line is in the bar and there are large tables also crammed into the bar which makes navigating the order line an exercise in invading everyone’s personal space. This is a high traffic area with staff and customers going both ways along the bar with the walkway pinched down into a space big enough for a half person. Unfortunately this seems totally unnecessary since they had plenty of smaller tables scattered around the rest of the dining space that could have been swapped into the bar area. Perhaps a “good problem to have“ as a business owner, but definitely distracted from the experience from the customer perspective, A feeling seemingly shared by almost everyone in line as they constantly had to move and get bumped by people passing by.
Overall, it almost lived up to the hype which is a success in this town where so many mediocre local’s and corporate chain’s qualities seem more of a marketing myth than actual substance. Having finally given up on the utter disaster at Ozona, We will definitely hit...
Read moreI was hoping for something special but instead I got mediocre. I ordered the sausage breakfast "platter". I could see from the orders coming out that the home fires were not done. I asked for the "crispy ones" that are always present when you're doing home fires on a large grill. I didn't get them so so much for service.
The home fries, as I suspected were seriously under cooked. They were so bad that I thought they were being made from frozen potatoes. I asked my server if this was the case. She had to think about it for a minute and then said no not frozen. Maybe these are what people expect and so they're okay with this. My expectations are for a much higher standard.
The gravy, on the side, was watery and runny and almost no flavor. Again seemed like a packaged gravy mix.
What can you say about eggs? These were just eggs and I didn't expect any more than what I got. The sausage was the same, nothing special, just sausage.
I looked at the reviews and this is what brought me to this diner. I was looking forward to finding a Sunday morning breakfast place to come to every few weeks. After this meal, I'm still looking.
I could have cooked this same meal at home and saved myself $15. If I were to cook this meal and put down my plate against the diner's plate, I would have won the taste test hands down. Therefore I just can't give this place more than...
Read moreMy immediate family (spouse, 2 kids - ages 4 & 7 years) went here for a random dinner last night. It wasn't out first trip to Hullabaloo Diner and it definitely will not be our last.
We were greeted and seated quickly, inside because it is a bit unseasonably chilly outside. Our waitress came to the table and took our drink order and interacted with our children, which they always love.
I got a double-decker diner club, my wife got a train wreck fries, my son got a pepperoni pizza and my daughter got a chicken quesadilla. Each of us enjoyed the food we got and there was plenty of it.
Everyone was very accommodating and friendly and the whole experience was great. My son finished off all but one slice of his pizza, my daughter ate just over half of her quesadilla (it was big), I finished my sandwich and fries (slices of ham, bacon and a pan fried turkey breast!), and my wife nearly finished her train wreck fries (I helped with the last few bites - good stuff.)
There were plenty of people in the tiny area, but it never felt crowded or got overly noisy. The groups ranged from friends to obvious families and ages ran the gambit. Everyone seemed to be satisfied all the time.
I highly recommend this place for anyone who has not tried it. The food, the atmosphere, the people... All worth the...
