I just made my first trip here today and it was INCREDIBLE. The coffee cake, vanilla cake, and cinnamon roll came home with me, and even my gluten eating family members couldn’t stop eating my treats! I also tried the flatbread and dinner rolls. They were both fantastic as well. The owners are so helpful and answered all my questions! I would highly recommend for anyone with severe food allergies (they even ask that you not bring other food into the bakery to eliminate cross contamination risk). I’m already planning my next drive from Denver to Colorado Springs just to stock up!
Also, I saw some people questioning their prices, and quality ingredients made from real food are not cheap. Are their ready made items more expensive than a fast food chain? Sure. Is healthy/allergen-safe food cheaper than prescription meds or a trip to the doctor? In my experience, yes.
A GI attack for someone with celiac is excruciating and can land you in the ER. Anaphylaxis from a nut allergy is life threatening. I believe a few extra dollars is worth avoiding those situations. Plus, if you’ve ever tried gluten free/dairy free/egg free baking from scratch in your kitchen, you’ll learn quickly that the extra expense is worth your time and frustration too. I know firsthand the heart break of throwing recipe fails away after blowing your grocery budget on specialty ingredients. Trust me, let the pros do it! Thank you, Sweet...
Read moreIt's really hard to find vegan restaurants anywhere, so it's good to know that Colorado Springs is home to Sweet Elizabeth's Organics. It's bright, quirky and homey, with a mission to bring healthy, delicious food that's free of the Top 8 Allergens and Gluten-Free (they do use coconut). Natasha, the manager, was friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable of what they offered. They offer both a cafe and bakery menu, as well as cakes for special occasions (ask to see the menu). My husband ordered the Soup of the Day (Butternut Squash) with a rosemary-garlic roll, plus waffles topped with coconut whipped cream and maple syrup; I had the lentil hummus sandwich with coleslaw, plus waffles topped with coconut whipped cream and strawberry compote. The food was fresh, light, and not bogged down with overwhelming amounts of salt, sugar, or dairy like most cafes. We finished all of it. With the amount of food we ordered, you'd think we walk out with a belly ache. Instead we walked out feeling full yet light. We even bought baked goods for the road. They use fresh organic ingredients and make all their goodies by hand right there in the restaurant. I definitely recommend this place for anyone who has allergen/gluten concerns and everyone looking into a plant-based diet. Will be...
Read moreWe were in from out of town and so excited to find a bakery that is allergy friendly and vegan!
It was the first time my daughter was able to go into a bakery and told she could pick from ANYTHING. That experience is pretty incredible.
We stayed a week so we tried quite a few things.
What we liked best: the cinnamon rolls and their frosting. Thay was one of the best cinnamon rolls I've ever had! My husband who doesn't have allergies agreed that it was awesome!
I had the cold pressed coffee chocolate cake and that frosting was also absolutely delicious. My daughter LOVED the strawberry frosting on her Cupcake.
Things that weren't as great: the cakes themselves weren't very flavorful. They weren't bad, just could have used a flavor boost. When I have chocolate cake, I want it to be really chocolate!
Also, we got a loaf of bread. It was alright, but really crumbly and didn't do well in our toaster. Despite following directions to place it in a zip lock in the fridge, it was pretty dry and crumbly by day 3. Again, not terrible. Just not something I would get again.
We will definitely be back if we come through town again for a huge box of...
