An impromptu dinner date was on the cards and my wife decided to surprise me as she thought of a place before I could for dinner. We then made the drive and arrived at Walter’s.
On a busy Thursday night, we were able to snag two seats at the bar counter. If we didn’t, it would have been a 45-60 minute wait. We arrived around 7:00 PM, so keep that in mind when you visit!
There was only one bartender, but he was on top of everything. Very attentive and great customer service.
The restaurant itself is very cozy and has a great “home” vibe. Definitely a place where you can bring your family or friends. Just make sure to plan ahead!
We decided to order cheesy breadsticks and a 14 in. pizza that we split 50/50. Her side was just cheese and pepperoni while mine contained bbq chicken and ricotta.
Starting off we did receive all items in a timely fashion with no errors. Fantastic start to see especially with how busy they were.
The cheesy breadsticks came first and they delivered! This wasn’t just cheese on bread. This was cheesy bread that had a great proportion of cheese to bread while delivering on flavor. They had a great garlic taste without being overpowering for my wife. The bread itself was top-tier. Very good base and each bite held up (no soggy bread here)! The marinara sauce on the side is definitely not store-bought. The marinara contained a great mixture of tomato and spices that complimented the cheesy breadsticks wonderfully. One of the best cheesy bread items we have had in Colorado Springs.
The pizza came in shortly after and did deliver great flavor. My wife thought the pepperoni pizza was pretty good but a little spicy. Not a bad thing by any means, because she usually likes everything mild. The pepperoni along with the other toppings though was plentiful.
My side contained a generous heaping of bbq chicken and ricotta. The bbq chicken was very good and complimented the house marinara and mozzarella cheese well. Not too salty either which is a hard thing to do with bbq chicken. The ricotta was very creamy and tasted fresh. Perfect fit for this savory pizza.
Overall we spent $28.01 before tip which is an absolute steal for the quality of food we received. We will be back and will recommend this to others who need a pizza fix in the Flying Horse area.
Last tip: Get all of the toppings, you won’t be disappointed on the quantity or quality of...
Read moreThe place was a nice "local" eatery with a sport bar and trendy bar feel. It was extremely clean and well maintained. Although it wasn't packed when we arrived (right at opening), I can see this place being extremely packed at night due to its small size. The bathroom was clean, but only one toilet per, and there were two of them. Overall, we loved the atmosphere. Regarding their food: We were told the deep dish pizza would take a bit longer when ordering, so we were prepared for a treat. Chicago deep dish is just that, deep, but this one missed the mark. I posted a photo of my fork next to it, so you can see its not that "deep." it did taste OK, but the sauce was meh to us. We ordered the large pizza, and not knowing the sizes, assumed it would be large. It was the size of a medium pizza from chain pizza places. I'd give the pizza a 3 out of 5. It was bad, but we wouldn't make a special trip to eat here. Regarding the meatball sub my wife ordered, here again, meh. The meatballs were a bit spicy, which is fine, but it wasnt for us. The salad, according to her, was as good as they usually come. We ordered the garlic bread. There were dry and crusty (not quite hard as a rock, but certainly dry). 4 pieces for 5 bucks.... Ahem... Waste of money. It did come with marinara, which you had to pour on your plate. Speaking of plates, I love the black square plates. I'm not sure why, but they were plenty big and seemed like they'd keep the messes down. The water cups were large, which we liked. Especially since the waiter didn't come around much. I did have the pleasure of waiting 10 to 15 minutes at the end of our meal for the bill. The waiter was browsing his phone behind the bar. Anyhow, we would eat here again, but wouldn't make a special trip for it. Only if we were really hungry and in the immediate neighborhood. I'd pass on it if you have a minute more to drive somewhere else. 5 stars for atmosphere, 2 stars for the pizza being "deep dish," but wasn't, and an average of 3 for the...
Read moreMy brother and I ate here. We were served by Hal. First and foremost, Hal did a tremendous job. Highly professional, friendly, and accessible for if we needed something. Beers were cold and poured properly. Not a fan of Chicago style pies but we decided to have at one that night. There was a crispy…almost Detroit style crust that was perfect. Their topping supplier is solid. The pepperoni was tasty. The jalapeños seem fresh not pickled in a jar or can. The sausage was spot on and rich. The sauce was also very nice.
So why only four stars?
This business is the perfect example for any ordinary person to use as an examination as to why NOBODY should take information or opinions from Buzzfeed seriously. We had their wings which on the menu says: “Best wings in Colorado according to Buzzfeed”. Buzzfeed lied to these good people. For starters, the wings are baked. While somewhat larger than normal wings they are not crispy at all. The sauce? Not even mild level of spice. We ordered Buffalo and Mango Habanero, two sauces that any objective wing-lover should expect to possess at least some level of heat. The president of your local HOA named Karen would likely find mayonnaise spicier than their Mango Habanero, which is again, exactly the kind of caliber of review you can expect from anyone at Buzzfeed. Some wine-aunt in training who probably writes op-eds for this disgusting publication, likely has “foodie” in her IG bio, and who has probably never worked a real job in her life, had the audacity to review these wings on behalf of this pathetic organization called Buzzfeed and tell the owner of Walter’s that these are supposedly the “Best wings in Colorado”. They did these good people dirty because these wings, while not the worst, wouldn’t even make it into the top 20 of wings from a restaurant in Colorado. Not even close. There is no heat, no crisp, and their only redeeming feature is their somewhat...
