Oh my gosh! What an experience. We checked Google reviews today in pursuit of some good soul food. We settled on Helen's Kitchen and, in doing so, hit a home run.
The first thing we discovered when we got there was that the meals were take out only. Her business is undergoing renovations, and the dining area is closed.
James met us outside to take our order. That's when we discovered that we would not be dining in today. We asked if we could go in and meet Helen, and he said, "Of course."
We had the most delightful conversation with this very young 84 year old mother of six, and one of eleven children. She has been in the restaurant business for nearly 40 years. Her son served us both up a hot plate of food to go.
We really didn't want to leave. Everyone there made us feel so much at home, and we certainly didn't want our conversation with Helen to end.
Good food. Good company. You couldn't...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhile visiting Columbus, MS we decided to seek out authentic home cooked soul food in an effort to support local business while visiting. We discovered Helen's Kitchen and Catering and what a discovery it was. Helen's is truly a hidden gem in Columbus, MS. The food was nothing short of amazing. True down home southern soul food. The servings were substantial and full of flavor. The service that we received was top notch and we were made to feel very welcome. So much so that we hung around town a little longer in order to enjoy a breakfast of some of the best salmon patties that I have had the pleasure of eating!!! From the friendly welcome of the locals that were also waiting on food to the kindness and great service of the owners, our overall visit was excellent. When in the area, Helen's will be one of my...

The BEC had thick buttery toast with gooey cheddar cheese and what appeared to be thick hickory style bacon and a hard fried egg. The Salmon was lightly crisped on the surface and moist and flavorful inside.
Environment: Definitely a down home atmosphere. It was like visiting your grandma's house for breakfast on a cold crisp morning. It's also very nice for the owner to chat with ya and personally bring your food. You can tell there's a lot of rich history in that restaurant and neighborhood. They don't take card payments but it's all good. They have wifi which is a huge plus.
Awesome first visit! Definitely won't...
