Big O Donuts — Restaurant in Cookeville

Heading into Cookeville today on errands I searched out the highest rated donut shops and read reviews. I’m always on the hunt to compare to my CA favorite donut place. The owner of Big O Donuts replied as he should to an improper review and so off I went. Walking in there are cases of donuts wall to wall! Nice, good sized donuts with many choices. I picked the large apple fritter and a dozen filled and miscellaneous ones that looked great. Everything looked great! I’ve eaten and sampled more than half. The apple fritter, glazed old fashion, chocolate old fashion, peanut butter and jelly and the apple crumb were fantastic!! Plenty of filling and very fresh flavors and textures. I’m in the midst of a sugar coma now but the remaining 5 will be gone today some time. Looks like I’ve definitely found my TN donut stop!! Don’t waste your time with others. I’ve never been a huge donut fan. I always liked donut holes and eclairs and things like that hit found donuts to be too much bread and not enough excitement.

Well, my life changed today when I walked into Big O Donuts. I intended on get a eclair or whatever other pastries they had, and I’m telling you, these donuts immediately caught my eye. Every single one of them looked so incredible. I asked the donut tender what her favorite donut was and she told me the strawberry cream (glazed not chocolate) so I said that’s the one I want. I got out side and devoured that thing liked I’ve never eaten before. Seriously I am not a donut believer. It was so good. The perfect amount of filling, the glaze was great and it wasn’t overly sweet. Perfection in a pastry. I can’t wait for an excuse to go back.

UPDATE 4 YEARS AFTER ORIGINAL REVIEW: The doughnuts are still the best I've ever had, but the hours they're open have gotten screwy. Yesterday they were closed for Washington's birthday. I don't really understand that, but ok. Today though, they were closed again, and their usual day to be closed is Wednesday. I have to call them from now on, every time I want doughnuts, to see if they're open. I'm not happy about that. They went from 5 stars to 4.

In my opinion, the best doughnuts I've ever had. Nice variety, reasonably priced, and a recently expanded menu which now includes breakfast sandwiches, smoothies and different varieties of coffee and hot tea.
