A 5 star review of Smoakies Bar-B-Que by Angela C.: As we were driving up we were wondering if this was the place because it looks small. Then you see a sign and you know it is the right place. Smoakies is right off the freeway. I have read a few reviews and decided to stop on our way back from vacation. So glad we did. It is small inside so I hope it isn't busy when you decide to go. We happen to be there between lunch and dinner. You seat yourself. It's a simple menu with really good choices. I had a sample platter of pulled pork, quarter dk chicken, 2 ribs and brisket (which is an upgrade) and a 1oz bag of chips or for $1.50 I upgraded to a side of fried pickles. They had a fair selection to choose from onion rings, tater tots, coleslaw, french fries a few others. My DH had 2 hot dogs with pulled pork. The sauces were: tomato sweet, mild tomato, mild mustard and hot mustard. All were good. Our meals were delicious! All our meats were tender and juicy. The chicken literally fell off the bone. My DH hot dogs were grilled and crisp and tasted like meat hot dogs. His pulled pork was tender and juicy. He used a combo of sweet tomato and mild mustard which was perfect 👌. After visiting family and traveling through the area, I decided to stop in and try some of Smoakies bbq. On Thursday, April 14, 2022, I walked in at 2:31pm and was told by a waitress that I must order takeout because they stop serving guests inside at 2:30. They close at 3:00pm. I understand the importance of having a cutoff time when people will no longer be served. But when you are down to counting seconds, maybe you should change your time to close the doors a little earlier. I could also understand this rule when the establishment is busy but I was the only customer in there. I would not have taken the time to write this review normally but the poor way of delivery that was used in explaining this to me is the reason for the review. The waitress had an attitude and acted as if it was inconveniencing her to even take the time to talk to me. Hopefully if you decide to stop here and enjoy some bbq, you will not have the same experience as I. Just ate there for the first time. They had a low carb plate, too, which is helpful for us keto truckers. The staff there is exceptionally nice. One of the cooks, on his break, sat at another table eating. We struck up a conversation with him about the food and he was quite knowledgeable about it all. My husband got a smoked half chicken, chopped pork and brunswick stew, which isn't keto. I just had 1/2 slab of smoked ribs that fell off the bone. Yeah, we were that hungry. Tastes so good you wonder why anyone would cover up that flavor with sauce. Then, the owner, Mr. Southwell came in. He came over and talked with us. The nicest man you'd ever meet. Turns out, he is on keto, too. So, I gave him my go to websites for recipes. Then, I got a to go box, went to our truck, and got him a couple pieces of our Fat Head Pizza to try. He may be making some menu changes, I think. The folks here are really friendly and the epitome of downhome southern hospitality. I would give 10 stars if possible.
