Herrera's has been my #1 favorite DFW Tex-Mex home for 25+ years.
It's what I call "San Antonio Style", since my family is originally from a little town south of San Antonio and this style is what I have enjoyed all my life (I'm in my mid 60s)
Love their house salsa and chips. The queso is tasty by itself, and also good with added picadillo ("taco meat"). The guacamole is usually pretty good, too.
I am a big fan of their enchiladas. My favorites are the ground beef enchiladas covered with chile con carne. On Wednesdays, the special is 2 enchiladas with rice and beans, always at a great price.
The big combo plates are awesome if you have a big appetite. I used to eat the "Jimmy Special", a crispy beef taco and guacamole plus one tamale, one cheese taco, one chicken enchilada and rice & beans. It's too much for me to handle now!
I really like their chicken tacos. I prefer the shredded stewed chicken, they also have fajita style chicken. So, most of the time I either get the beef enchiladas plate or the chicken tacos a la carte.
The service is always good, and the drinks are always cold, and they keep refilling the chips and salsa til you can't eat any more.
I love Herrera's and I always will. It is always my...
Read moreThe first time I went to Herrera's was at the original location on Maple. We drove up and I couldn't believe that there was a line around the front of the building. We had a cooler of beer (and a bucket of frozen margaritas that we drank with our meal) so the wait wasn't bad. As we got towards the front of the line a guy in a BMW pulled up, looked at the line and said I'm not waiting for this and pulled out a $50 and told (not asked) the owner to let him cut the line and was promptly told get to the end of the line everyone waits. The food was some of the best food I had ever eaten(BTW the plate was less than $5). From that point on we made at least 1 trip a week to eat there. Always greeted by name when we went. Although through the years and different locations the food has changed(only a little but still great) it is still one of the best places to eat good authentic texmex food. Highly recommend anyone to go and enjoy the food. I'm moving to the Philippines in a couple weeks so good Mexican food will only be a sweet memory for me. Thank you Herrera's for all the lbs I gained eating your...
Read moreI came here for lunch back in April. Prices are reasonable, especially the lunch specials. I ended up ordering the steak fajita plate Friday lunch special for $9.95. Initially they bring out customary chips and salsa. The chips could use more salt. The salsa is pretty plain, but quite spicy. I like how they bring the salsa in a little pitcher that allows you to pour the salsa yourself. Also, the drink sizes are very large. These two things ensure that you are well taken care of even if the waitress hasn't come by in a while.
The fajitas were authentic and tasted good. Probably not the highest quality of fajita meat but it tasted good. The tortillas were good/authentic.
I sat inside and the atmosphere is pretty mediocre but the outside patio area looks awesome. Sure the chairs are typical uncomfortable metal chairs but I love the pergolas and the tile floor and the expansiveness of it all.
I don't think this place will blow you away but it's a good spot if you are looking for some cheap...
