Im gonna tell you EXACTLY WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE IF YOU WANNA CONTINUE TO HAVE A SOLID FUTURE IN THE RESTAURANT TRADE, because there was no excuse for the awful take- out food we ended up paying $53 for and tossing out after 2 bites. Tonight my hubby and I had one of the worst dinners EVER! I had the CHEESE RAVIOLI WITH MARINARA SAUCE. I detected overpowering nutmeg in the cheese. It had no place being there in that huge amount. Personally, I don't care to use it myself but it was much, too much. It lent an odd aftertaste that ruined the dish completely! My tiny side salad (which I've always loved) was drowning in dressing which made it soggy and I mostly got the hard, white ribs of the lettuce instead of the tender greens I always looked forward to. The olives were even mushy. The MOST EGREGIOUS SIN committed tonight was the VEAL PARM DINNER. The veal was tender and perfectly fried but THE MEAT SAUCE WAS AWFUL! As an Italian whose cooked for years knows that cooking the meat and/or bones for the sauce has to browned quickly and then cooked slowly and at a low, barely simmering level. Whomever did the cooking must've been in a rush because it was obvious from the first bite that the meat and/or bones were cooked at a way too hot temp for way too long. Im NOT talking about a burnt taste, but cooking the meat and bones too fast and hot always imparts a NASTY, GREASY, ALMOST RANCID FLAVOR. It can happen with anyone's homemade chicken soup too if you boil it for too long and hot. These things need low and slow cooking. The taste is unmistakable and I detected it from the very first bite. JUST HORRIBLE. Whomever is doing the cooking over there is a amateur or just had given up completely. I'd hate to see Roseland go the way of the dinosaur. Past success doesn't always guarantee a future. You really are only as good as your last meal. THE ENTIRE MEAL HAD ISSUES. I FEAR DROPPING THAT KIND OF MONEY AGAIN ONLY TO BE DISAPPOINTED AND STILL BE HUNGRY AFTERWARDS. Im not a hater. Im not a troll. Im giving what i hope is constructive criticism in order for you guys to know exactly what the issues were in order for you to SAVE THE ONE BRIGHT SPOT IN AN OTHERWISE DISMAL TOWN. It'll be a while before we come back. Nobody wants to spend top dollar on nasty food. Roseland was always a treat for our family. My brother would drive a long way to have "Roseland" with us. I'd hate to tell him that Roseland lost the magic they once had. If your reviews don't improve, that may have been my the last Roseland meal. There was no excuse for what we experienced on 1/12/19. What a...
Read moreFirst let me say that this place was busy and it has a reputation of being one of the better places in the area for pizza. I ordered a broccoli rabe and sausage largest one so as to have some leftover for the next day. Got a very nice waitress who did her best to please me and service was quick. As I am not a fan of the trend of burnt or charred on my pizza, I specifically asked for no black or burnt crust. I also asked for garlicky. What I got was a burnt pizza. Not a happy camper! All it tasted like was burnt and that taste overrides the whole taste of the pizza! So now after a busy day of working, I really just did not want to be waiting for it to be redone. Had it been daytime, I would've waited possibly. Very disappointed since I had asked for it not to be burnt. Now whose fault was it. The waitress said she told them in the kitchen so why did they do it. Sounds deliberate or not paying attention to it. Now I noticed that on this site there are a lot of pictures of charred pizzas and a lot of uncharred ones too . So it seems it can go either way. My dinner was ruined by the terrible taste of burnt and my trust lost. So I probably won't be back as I told the waitress of my big disappointment. In all fairness she made a big effort to correct this by not fully charging the price and giving me extra bread to take home, A whole loaf. I only could eat three slices of this carcaginic pizza. The burnt taste was just too strong. Some people maybe smokers who aren't so sensitive can tolerate this taste of charred it seems. So while I did not like that taste it seems this trend has become popular and that it's an indication of New Haven pizza when it's charred so everyone loves to have those bragging rights by showing off their charred pizzas. This place is popular and you need to try for yourself to see if it's for you. The toppings were generous and it does seem to be made superior to other places except for the charred part. Anyway I called up my old boyfriend who is pure Italian, a smoker and will eat charred if it's free and dropped the loaf and rest of the pizza to him at a private club he was at. When ai called to ask him if he liked it he said yes he did and thanked me. Moral of the story. Everyone has different taste buds and tastes but mine is...
Read moreMy favorite place to eat in the Naugatuck Valley. Roseland Apizza is amazing. We live about 15 minutes away in Ansonia and once a month or so we go over for the pizza, family style salad and arugula salad we crave.
I know people complain about the cost but a huge pizza, an enormous family style or arugula salad and a pitcher of root beer is $40 with a ton of leftovers.
The bread is excellent, crusty with lots of good chew and delicious with butter. I almost always get a refill. The family style salad is probably enough for 4 people abd has delicious meat and cheese and it's what wowed us the most our first visit.
I have had both the good ziti and very good lasagna that are under $15 with salad mid week. Although not destination food.
And we usually share a medium pizza, maybe the two of us should downgrade to small, portions are huge here. Our favorite was a harvest pizza with fresh tomato and basil in the fall. My wife loves pepperoni and mushroom pizza and it's superb here.
The clams are excellent and again enormous portions. And the arugula salad is amazing, hot mushrooms and delicious mozzarella over a good hearty salad. We tried the arugula pizza once when we had a friend over and it was too much. The salad is better on it's own. I also thought the garlic bread was too busy.
It's a family run business with old booths, mismatched plates and it's first come, first serve. This isn't a big issue Tuesday-Thursday but is on the weekends. They are dinner only. They also have an inexpensive take out pizza with no mozzarella from Tuesday-Thursday. If you do want to go on Friday or Saturday I would honestly recommend takeout, it's just too busy.
We are so happy we found this after a recommendation from the funky used bookshop just down the hilk Books by the Falls, it's special. There is a reason they have been drawing crowds since 1935. And honestly, you really don't need to get the crazy and expensive seafood pies. And do become a regular if...
