Mt. Royal Inn . This spot has just popped up on my wing radar in the past month or so, with some folks mentioning it. Not sure why we never went there with my motorcycle club when we were getting wings weekly at spots all over South Jersey, but anyway... . I took the kid over to Philly and we hit up the Eagles Pro Shop. Then my son was like "Hey, since we're in Philly, let's get a cheeseteak!" I'm like "Ok awesome....Lets hit up Johns Roast Pork". Ooops, CLOSED on Mondays. . I said we can go over the bridge and hit up Holy City Publick House in Gloucester and grab some Chiodi wings....Opps, Don't open until 4pm on Mondays... . That's when I figured we'd try Mt. Royal Inn. . Short and sweet review. Super big disappointment. Menu says Market Price, which is $15.95 per an order of 10. Steep...they were big. My .02cents....if they are going to charge that much, and the wings are that large.... let me opt for an order of 5 and pay $8 for it. . They were large, not crispy, unbreaded, served in a takeout container. This place is a dive bar to the extreme (but that's totally ok....we love dive bar spots). There were a noticeable amount of flies, zipping around the bar. All the liquor had plastic cups over the pour spouts and the taps had blue "plugs" when we arrived. . The bartender was super friendly and helpful. . We grabbed the hot and honey with black pepper and the "Famous MRI Sauce" (which come to find out is Tony's Wing Sauce, which they have at the Golden Nugget Tavern where the wings are better (in our opinion). . The most recent friend of ours to recommend this place Danielle told us about the Pine Hill Tavern, Golden Nugget (which we knew about) and this place....This place was really just a disappointment to us. We had high hopes because the Pine Hill Tavern wings were excellent, Golden Nugget we already knew and enjoyed....but this place....I guess if you're South of 42, down that area, it's good.....but we won't go out of our way to go there again. Glad we tried it though! We gave it 2 stars based on how hyped this place was versus what we got. We wouldn't tell anyone to go out of their way...
Read moreThis place is so bad that I'm not even angry, just amused. My mom moved to the area about 2 years ago, but we never tried this place because we were told it was terrible. We love a dive, though, and we knew it was under new management, plus we had seen their Bloody Mary in an article, so we were excited to give it a shot. What a lol. First, we ordered the Bloody Mary, and got just a normal, average drink. Turns out their featured one is a special that we have to specifically ask for. Totally fair enough, but considering it was featured in an article, and we clearly aren't regulars (no joke, 98% old men talking loudly about how drunk they were last night and all the hot chicks they saw), you'd think the bartender would point it out to us. Not a huge deal, but a disappointment. We ordered the wings (only one type on offer), fried pickles, and stuffed long hots. You guys, lol. First, so many reviews mention the EPIC WINGS. If y'all think these wings are epic, I'm so sad for you. They were fine and I ate them all. The sauce was good and plentiful, but not at all hot. No kick at all, and no wet wipes given. If you guys want a truly epic wing experience in a dive that knows what they're doing, make the drive to The Jug Handle in Maple Shade. The rest of the food was literally inedible. Even the cook was like "I don't know what happened with the pickles" when she brought them out. Like, what? Don't bring them out then. And the long hots. The sight of them actually nauseated us. We couldn't stop laughing. Fortunately, the food was taken off the bill when the server saw we didn't eat a bite. Thanks for that, MRI! I don't know who is paying off whom to get this bar considered one of the best in South Jersey, but to that I say: yikes. Leave this place to the creepy old men and seek...
Read moreHad a great time at Mt. Royal Inn! I came to try the wings, especially the MRI wings since they were voted best around. They were solid — well-cooked and tasty — but honestly, I expected a bit more in terms of flavor or spice considering the hype. Still good, just not standout.
We also tried the Maple Bourbon wings, which were unique — basically wings drizzled with syrup and a sprinkle of salt. Tasty overall, but I’d suggest making sure the salt is spread more evenly, as only the top wings had it, leaving the bottom ones a little bland in comparison.
The star of the night was the mac & cheese with BBQ on top — absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked and full of flavor. I’d come back just for that dish alone.
We sat outside, and although it was a bit chilly, an employee helpfully showed us how to turn on the outdoor heaters on demand — a really nice touch. The new outdoor space is definitely a great addition to the place.
All in all, a solid experience. While the wings didn’t quite blow me away, the atmosphere, service, and that mac & cheese made it well worth the visit. I’d absolutely...
