Decent food for a small town. Some days are better than others - maybe the cooks are different. I've gotten several items from breakfast to soup to dinner entrees. Breakfast used to be amazing but has gone down hill. One day I went in at 8pm for dinner and they were practically pushing me out the door even though they didnt close until 9. Take out was more disappointing. Overall what you would expect of a small town restaurant, though.
Editing after I gave them another chance. I ordered to go as I have a newborn and really wanted some breakfast on mother's day. Drove 20 minutes to come to silver dollar. I ordered a Mexican skillet with chorizo, no cheese as my baby has a dairy allergy and I am breastfeeding, pancakes, French toast, and other Miscellaneous items. I waited 15 minutes in the drive thru and nobody came then I called and someone came to the window. They gave me a Mexican skillet with taco meat. I got 10 minutes away before I noticed. Called they said they would fix it so I came back. A lady, I think the manager, came to the window and said she heard no cheese but not chorizo. Moments later handed me a bag and walked away. I immediately checked this time and it had chorizo but was loaded with cheese. I called again as nobody was at the window and a waitress came and was very rude when my husband said it wasn't supposed to have cheese. Walked away before he finished talking. Came back said it will be fixed and to pull around. Currently sitting here waiting for food over an hour after I initially ordered. The staff used to be one of the good things about this place and now they've been lost that. I understand it's mother's day and it's busy, but wouldn't you want to make sure every mother who brought her family to your establishment for a nice meal on mother's day was treated with kindness and respect? I understand mistakes happen in the kitchen but the customer service is seriously lacking as well.
I've had friends who used to come here every weekend say they've received moldy food and terrible service. They drove up to New lenox for their mothers day meal. Perhaps we should have done the same.
Just received food and the girl goes here you go and walks away. No apology after all the bs, nothing....
Read moreWe went out to enjoy the nice weather and see what there is to see and ended up in Elwood, a small town in the cornfields next to a giant train yard. My wife noticed this place and decided we should give it a try and I am glad we did.
I had a croissant sandwich they called The New Yorker. It had corned beef piled high with cheese and mayonnaise. They offered horseradish or mustard but I had too much wasabi with my sushi last night and took a pass on that. The sandwich was great and was accompanied with fries, which were perfectly prepared; golden crisp and not greasy, but just enough so the salt did not roll off, and beef barley soup. I did add some salt and pepper and it was very good as well.
My wife ordered skirt steak with poached eggs and hollandaise, tomato slices in lieu of fries, and a biscuit with gravy. The steak was a good cut and perfectly medium rare. The eggs were excellent as well with homemade hollandaise sauce and the biscuit (not homemade but impossible to tell) and gravy reminded me of good old Southern cooking.
Their menu offers a wide selection including jambalaya, which I will come back for, and an assortment of hamburgers, one which is a half pound cheeseburger in between two grilled cheese sandwiches, add some bacon and I'm in.
The lunch crowd was coming in while we were eating but the waitress was attentive and brought me another lemonade just as I finished the first one and refreshed my wife's coffee as well as stopping by after serving the meal to inquire how it was and if we needed anything. She also thought enough to bring hot sauce and Tabasco for the steak and eggs.
Over all, it was an excellent dining experience at a place I thought was going to be a greasy spoon joint. The first diner I ever gave five stars and I regret that I was so eager to eat that I forgot to...
Read moreWorst experience by far from this restaurant, order a very simple takeout order. A la mex omelette with toast and a butcher skillet with toast and a side of grits. Drive ten minutes back to my house to indulge to find out that my butcher skillet isn't a skillet but a omelette. ok understandable, go through the rest of it to find the la mex omelette doesn't have its salsa, or sour cream. ok so I call the restaurant back and explain. granted they realized and admitted fault and gave me credit for the skillet for next time. After the call I open the toast thinking ok I'll be able to eat the toast and hash browns. To find another problem the butter on the toast is gritty literally has a texture of grated Parmesan cheese that's really chalky and almost no butter flavor. So my girlfriend calls back to explain and see what exactly the type of butter they use. upon the call the hostess (Amanda) tells her very rudely "I'm sorry if theres gritty butter on your toast if you don't think its safe to eat then don't eat it" and hung up on her. Called immediately back to speak with a manager and she answers the phone n says I'm busy there's alot of tables in here that I'm taking care of and hung up on her again. Now mind you I was in there not even 12 minutes prior to this. There was one table being taken up by a father n his two kids. This service is exactly why I won't be going back, and due to this being the only restaurant in small town Elwood, you would think they would have way better customer service and especially not speak to customers the way she has. One star and will not...
