Grandma's Restaurant is a fairly recent addition to the food and lodging scene in Austin, Nevada... but it's clearly the best place to eat. After two weeks of cross-country motorcycling, my last stop en route to the West Coast was central Nevada. I checked into the Cozy Mountain Motel and walked over to Grandma's. I ordered the NY strip dinner. It was a delicious "home cooked" meal. The staff has lots of personality.
However, breakfast the next morning was sheer delight. I wanted to get an early start... something quick to eat. I was back at Grandma's where I met Tripp. He was the chief cook and bottle washer on duty. He was very friendly, but drew an askance look... I thought he was local waiting for breakfast. Nope! He was the chef. He prepared a magnificent "Denver" breakfast burrito with a side of country potatoes. The potatoes were not pre-cut and poured out of a freezer bag... they were the real deal. Tripp cooked the meal and served it.
I started chatting with Tripp. He has worked his way across country a couple of times as a chef. He has lots of interesting stories about places he has worked. So much for an early start... after one coffee too many, I said good-bye and started down the road. When in Austin... check into the Cozy Mountain and ask when Tripp is working at Grandma's Restaurant. The meal and the chef will...
Read moreI have never ate here or been to this town. I'm from California. My husband is a long distance truck driver that broke down in this town in the middle of the night. He parked outside the gas station in this small town and hoped they would have some epoxy to hopefully fix the broken piece on his reserve water tank. They did not. There is no hardware or part store in the town and it's very remote. He didn't know how he was going to get repaired to deliver his time sensitive load. On a chance, I called this restaurant in hopes of finding someone to help. It was 8 in the morning and the restaurant doesn't open until 5pm so I knew it was a long shot for someone to answer. And someone did. I don't know the name of the man that answered but I want to thank him. Not only was he so kind on the phone but he didn't hesitate to go try to help my husband. Even though the epoxy didn't work, he gave my husband advice that got him out of there. His load was a day late but at least he made it. I don't know what the food is like in this restaurant but if the customer service is anything like the man that answered the phone, I'm sure it's phenomenal! God bless that man. You might not have helped him fix the truck but you really did uplift...
Read moreFirst off, "grandma" is not who you're expecting. I stayed out with the bikes while the rest of my group went in to get the rooms (same couple own/ run this place and the Cozy Mountain inn a block away). We got the bikes and rooms squared away and walked back up to eat and I literally laughed out loud when I met her, since I had assumed my group had been talking with a stereotypical grandma, saying how nice and sweet she was, etc.
Anyway, my wife and I got the pizza, which was unexpectedly good for a town this in-the-middle-of-nowhere. My traveling partners got something else which I don't remember now, but they were very happy with it. And they are often picky. At the time, their nightly special was prime rib or something like that (some slow-cooked meat the guy had been cooking for hours), which wasn't ready when we ordered, but it seemed like the whole town showed up to eat whatever it was, and to socialize, by the time we left. That's a good sign.
They had several good beers available, which was also unexpected given a town this size. My friends got some cocktails that they said were very good, too. If I'm ever back that way, I'll absolutely come here again. ...
